The August issue of "Racer" magazine published a list of favorite racecars as picked by its readers. The list is an interesting mix of F1 cars, Indycars and sports cars. Obviously, what makes a racecar a "favorite" will differ from one person to the next, but it appears that visual appearance was a significant factor.

Here is the listed top 10 in increasing order of popularity:

    10. Porsche 956/962
    9. Chaparral 2K
    8. Lotus 49
    7. Lola T70
    6. Ford GT40
    5. Porsche 917K
    4. Ferrari 330 P4
    3. Lotus 38
    2. Lotus 79
    1. Eagle-Weslake

A footnote: the text indicates that the variants of the McLaren M8 Can-Am cars were listed individually; if the votes for all variants were combined, the M8 series would have finished 7th.

I can't quibble too much with the choices, though I might have ordered some of them a bit differently. Purely from an appearance standpoint, the Eagle has always been my favorite open-wheel car and the P4 my favorite closed-wheel one, so having them both in the top 4 seems about right. I never picked an Indycar as such, but I'd say that the Lotus 38 (a cousin of the Eagle, as they were both substantially designed by Len Terry) would be high on my list.

    So what do you think?

I like the list. I would combine the Lotus 49 w/ the 38, or remove the 38, and add the Chaparral w/ the high wing ... 2F, I think.
Dan's Eagle is the hands down most beautiful open-wheeler in my estimation.

From purely an aesthetic point of view, it is surprising that neither of the Group 44 Jaguar
GTP cars (XJR-5 and XJR-7) did not make the list.

Not only were they beautiful to look at with their white and green livery, they sounded
fantastic and driven by some of the top sports car drivers of our generation including
Hurley Haywood, Brian Redman, Bill Adam, Bob Tullius, Chip Robinson and others.

Other than that, the list is pretty much spot on.

Solid list, love the little Lotus 23b and 904 above any other Porsche though. ;)

The list is so objective and subjective a "safety net" is implied. I have never met a racecar I did not like.

Those Nissan R90CKs were incredibly fast on the banking at the 24 Hours of Daytona
    in 1991 and 92.

We got video of them going through the tri-oval at night and the way they held their
line right up against the wall was unforgettable. Brutally fast with their V8 twin turbo
    layouts built for Le Mans.

I think the list also leaves off some the more modern prototypes which were significant
such as the BMW LMR V12, Audi R8 and Audi R10 TDI (the first diesel powered car to win
    at Sebring and Le Mans).

Lists like these are meant to get conversations going and its been successful in that
    respect.

Where was the pic of the Eagle Toyota GTP taken? There are only a few of those around, & that's not the one Dan held onto.

David I found it on Google. I was lucky enough to have seen them race and at that time I was a MR2 owner so the 4-banger domination held a soft spot for me.

Those R90s (along with perhaps the Corvette GTPs) may have been the fastest cars ever
on the Daytona banking at S/F. They regularly ran two or three feet higher up the line than
the next fastest Jaguars and Porsches.

During that era of such high downforce a driver could literally remove a sticker from the bodywork, loved those cars. Hopefully I will soon be adding some GTP parts to my collection.... I may have to increase the size of my future display by 100% though.

    IMSA GTP ruled!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any rendition of any 'Silk Cut' Jag would be a truly great addition to your stable. I almost feel like I am talking to my reflection.

Despite my (somewhat) tongue in check comments about the marque in the F1 section, I'd have to agree there. A truly stunning race car. Be it the 'early' definitive JW Wyer version or the final Can Am beasts, they are very, very nice!

    Cheers,
    Ian
