    I believe that was first a bit of a cappella "marching music" - a cadence used in boot camp while doing more marching and more running - long before groups here and there picked up on it.

    To give an idea how long this has been in the mainstream, @ 100 of us brainwashed youth were singing this on the way to "Destination Unknown" in '76-'78 during some Bob Jones University (*shudder*) youth ministry summer distraction.
