Alonso had already been 'discovered' by Briatore who started to manage him. His time at Minardi was just waiting for an opportunity to get into a top team.
Counter performance couldn't affect his status.
What 'made' Senna in F1 was his fantastic Monaco GP with the obsolete Toleman, where he almost pipped Prost to the post in the rain.
Clerk of the course Jacky Ickx prevented a public humiliation for the Frenchman by stopping the course; a decision that was questionned at the time. After that, everyone wanted to sign him! Senna was shinning in a bad car; Montagny doesn't

Seriously? He raced the Indy 500 at least once, if not a couple times. Gilles brother and named Jacques after him. He's actually one of the most accomplished snowmobile racers in Canada.

    You are partially correct:
Senna shone in a GREAT chassis with an underfunded team, and an underpowered and underdeveloped Brain Hart turbo 4 cyl motor going against the TAG/Porsche, Renault and BMW powerplants. Senna himself said in 1990 or so the Toleman was the best chassis he ever drove.
I don't think it was just his Monaco drive that raised eyebrows, he did pretty good in a few other circuits as well, I think he was 3rd fast time in Detroit, or something like that, but crashed two cars at the chicane in practice both days.

Isn't today's Team Renault actually Team Toleman ? Frank Toleman sold out to Luciano Bennetton, which eventually became ??? and is now called Renault ????
