Starting in 2014. Yamaha To Build Cars By 2014 » Motorcycle.com News Interesting to see if they eventually bring some of their bike-building brainpower to four wheels. They have created some very innovative bikes over the years and seem willing ti take chances the other three of the Big Four do not these days.
They have had a good start. They built the Toyota 2000GT for Toyota and of course don't forget the Yamaha OX99.
They have made engines for Volvo, and some of those engines were tuned and used in the 650+ hp Noble M600 hypercar. They also finely tuned the Lexus LFA exhaust system. I think we can see some really sweet stuff from Yamaha, but I wonder where in the market they will position themselves. These news has me very excited.
Exciting news, and finally someone to start building new cars from more or less scratch who isn't a rich dreamer or Elon Musk, but still I am sceptical... I don't know if there's a tougher industry to enter!
Yamaha did the engines for the first 2 generations of the Ford Taurus SHO. Aluminum V6. 7,000 rpm w/ manual tranny. I think Mercury Marine actually designed the engine, though.
Jim saying this is all we need to know. Jim, do you know of any back doors rumors? I'm not asking for you to share what you know, just if you do know anything.
Here's the proposed car... Yamaha Motiv.e City Car Concept Unveiled at 2013 Tokyo Auto Show Gordon Murray.
These guys have made quality products for a very long time. Musical instruments of the highest quality, just check some of their piano's. I have also had a few of their guitars. Not Gibson or music man, but a good solid playing guitar most of the time. Trumpets and other brass instruments I believe they used to make also, but I'm not so sure they still do. Big company. My only wonder is why they didn't do this sooner.
I own a triple cylinder two stroke Yamaha snowmobile and it is such a fantastic motor and the build quality of the entire sled is just phenomenal. I previously owned an 87 Yamaha fZ 700 motorcycle with the genesis engine and I believe that was one of the first motors to use the 5 valve per cylinder technology. Superb company.
According to the Wikipedia article for the Toyota 2000GT, Toyota 2000GT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , Yamaha designed most of it and built the entire car under contract from Toyota. That's consistent with everything I've read over the years, as well. Yamaha has done a lot of other engine work for Toyota over the years, including DOHC head design for many Toyota engines. But for the 2000GT, it was mostly designed by Yamaha, and entirely manufactured by Yamaha.
I've driven their motorcycles and played their instruments, all the real deal. Consider that they also basically engineered the Toyota 2000GT over 40 years ago and you realize they are hardly newbies. I think they should play in the higher end / sporty car arena, not the low end, mass market ala Honda and Toyota.
Correct. Yamaha designed and created the entire 2000GT car. It was originally commissioned to build a car for Nissan, but the design was rejected. That was then picked up and completed by Yamaha under contract to Toyota. Yamaha is an outstanding engineering concern. This is not a stretch for them, and they tend to dominate in their core businesses. I believe they can be hugely successful if they stay focused.
Peugeot, in 1921 had a triple overhead cam engine running 5 valves per cylinder. Mitsubishi were the first to market a car with a 5 valve head, in 1989 Yamaha made their first one in in 1991 for Toyota
If memory serves me right, the block was a Cosworth design and the heads (4valves per cyl) and dual runner intake was Yamaha. The engine was capable of running 12,000 rpm. They had to limit the revs at 8500 to protect the Accessories (PS, AC, alt) the weak point was the cam gears on the early motors. Otherwise great little 3.0l motors
