Michael, was 008 the only one with two small thin oblong vents in the cowling just above the egg crast grill and two also below the grill. I have two pictures of a corsa with this setup and the only car of the period I can find with these is 008. It is not really clear in these pictures but the car could be a short wheel base one. Thanks tongascrew
You forget "what". Very unique, the bulby (bulbish?) headlight glasses = #016I Where? Watch the number plate of the car in the back = USA When? Looking at the other cars and the clothing it must be "in period" = 1949/50 Who? A rather small guy needing a seat cushion in order to reach the pedals....
For sure it was not #006I. But #008I and #014I are very similar, and there is still the phantom of #018I around. I will not go into detail, because research is still running, and I am in a hopeless state of confusion.
Michael, I never thought I would hear you admit to any sort of confusion. Don't give up. If anyone can clear this up you have the best chance just one man's opinion tongascrew
Hmm, now that you say it...., checked my archive - and indeed, filed as Spa 24h 1948. Was convinced that the plate is American, but indeed the Belgian plates up to 1953 had been similar - 2 x 3 digits with similar font. But I'm missing the 3rd headlight which at Spa was mounted in the middle of the radiator grille. However, for sure it's #016I.
11/5/1948, 24 h de Spa-Francorchamps: (race in may or july?) Louis Chiron/Luigi Chinetti 166 S "016i" n° 40 ab
Michael, can you help. I hace two pictures of #008. One show race #98[first number #9 is not clear]. Car has cycle fenders and a full width windscreen with no A or center pillars. The other race #62 shows bolt on front clam shell fenders and two Brooklands style wind screens Any idea what events these are from. thanks tongascrew
This is Righetti at the San Remo GP 1949. Which 166 SC would this be? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Aaah, Boudewijn is smelling the fish....! Clearly a SWB. #008I was with Vallone, and #014I with Bianchetti. So either it was #014I on loan from Bianchetti, or "something else"... But the bigger question about San Remo - which car drove Sterzi? Looking for a photo of him since years now without success.
The results I have show Sterzi as a DNS in the San Remo race, reason unknown. Vallone indeed drove 008I as shown in this photo. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Those "bulby" headlight covers were still on the car when Briggs got it. There are pics as I recall, at the Glenn with these on the car. Early aerodinamics or just protection.? Of course in the "old days" drivers would reverse the headlamps for day light driving to protect the lights. Nice touch. I hadn't noticed the pillow. It looks to me like this picture was taken in Europe. Place and date would be nice. just one man's opinion tongascrew
Looking again, the tall gent on the left looks to be wearing an English double breasted suit and the others English style "macs". Was Mr. Folland on the short side?? just one man's opinion tongascrew
Hi, any other way of accessing this file.I would love to print out some of these pictures but can't get printer to work. Probably something to do with Adobe. thanks tongascrew
Michael, were you able to print out these pictures? I have never seen them eather and would really like to have copies. I seem to be able to set everything up but can't get the printer to start. Probably something to do with Adobe.Am I missing something in the set up. tongascrew
