It's one of the greatest cars that never was. The Jaguar V12 could have really been something (more than the boat anchor it is) with those 4-cam heads.
Here is one from the Shuman garage tour. It was one of my favorite cars of the day. BT Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Agreed somewhat. The XJ13 V-12 was a different engine altogether, and used 2 XK heads. The later production V-12's had an odd head design, but they were quite indistructable given good maintenance. I have seen Jag V-12's with 250.000 miles on them, and hash marks from the original hone in the cylinders. The nice thing about that engine is the very short stroke (70mm) and thus its' willingness to rev without breaking. At least 1 person in Oz has an XJ13 replica with a quad-cam V-12, for which they used 2 AJ6 cylinder heads (from the XJ40). You end up with a very big, but powerful lump.
I've got pics of most of the 23 cars on display at my home computer. I'll try to remember when I get home and post them up. BT
Your experience with the Jag V12 is different than mine. While it's true that the bottom end is pretty tough, the heads are anything but. I've seen numerous examples of dropped valve seats over the years (damaging pistons and heads). The cooling system looks like something designed by Rube Goldberg. The AJ6 heads are an interesting choice (are they a "bolt on"?) considering how much trouble the early XJ40 had with head gaskets. It would be interesting to see more about this engine.
