Hello, I just bought a 2013 458 Spider that was a relatively great value due to a (not to my taste) paint job…… the original rossa corsa had been painted over in matte green… like a dark military looking green.

I also bought a 2-year extended warranty to cover any issues that could pop up on a 9 year old car.

In a perfect world, when those 2 years are up, I’d want to trade it in for a 488 or F8 Spider when those prices come down a bit.

    So my question now is:

Option A - they are quoting me $10k for a full wrap job that includes the door jams and inside the roof compartment. (ie: see no green anywhere)

Option B - they are quoting me $20-$25k to do a complete respray back to the original rossa corsa. That’s a full on glass out, doors off, proper job.

I think for me the wrap would be fine. I’m just concerned about getting killed on resale when I have to disclose that under the wrap is a non-original matte green atrocity.

So it’s just really a depreciation equation I suppose…. Is an extra $15k now going to gain me more than $15k in resale???

IMHO I would do the paint job - People will/may argue with me which is fine but to me wraps are more accepted on Lambos, gawdy Mercs and even McLarens but not as much Ferrari's. That coupled with the odd inverse fact that the wrap would be covering an arguably ugly and definitely negatively-impactful PAINT color. Usually wraps are done to allow an owner to do something suited to their taste or a bit frivolous over a more normal color like Rossa Corsa, Nero, Grigio etc. - So if you decided to wrap it in Barbie Pink while you owned it and disclose that it is a wrap - or simply remove the wrap - you are left with a popular and "normal" color. Whoever the moron is that painted a Rosso Corsa Ferrari in Matte Green should be stoned in the streets or Maranello but to me the only way to stop the hemorrhage of stupidity is to spend the money to paint the car and return it to the color code it came with - assuming you like Rossa Corsa better than Matte Green then you are happier as an owner and are assured of proper resale if/when the time comes.

    Just my .02 - Cheers :)

Agree! - someone wanting matte green is the perfect situation for a temporary wrap.

And yes, I would prefer to paint it for sure. Especially since the green is something that would never be an option for me.

The question is just more of a financial one. When I go to resell it, do I get all of the $25k back for doing it ‘correctly’… or would it be wasted in that these cars would lose too much value for it to be worth it.

I would guess it already has a wrap. I can’t imagine somebody actually repainting in that color!? But yeah if I’m wrong and you want to keep it I’d get it repainted correctly. Oh and you’re free to pick an awesome color.

I was wondering what happened to the OD Green 458 at San Diego Ferrari . . . . Looked like a great deal, hope you can solve the paint question.

are you sure it was actually stripped and painted and it isn’t plastidip or autoflex? Autoflex in particular can pass as true paint

It’s really painted. Not a wrap.

And not even that well. Inside the roof compartment you can still see traces of red.

I’ve never heard of that before? The dealer told me it was paint. But if it can be stripped off in any way back to the original absolutely I would want that.

If it’s a Ferrari dealer telling you that they probably know what they’re talking about unfortunately.

I hope you got a hell of a deal cause resale is gone regardless of what you do.

personally since you are never getting the money back, wrap it. I mean you bought the car cause you wanted a deal right? So save the money.

I would not paint it. Just wrap it and drive it and enjoy.

Again - Just my opinion as a fellow 458 Spider owner - and reading the input and thoughts of some VERY knowledgeable people on here and general projections of Ferrari Market experts - I think 458s - both Italia's and Spiders - will continue to hold their value to a very high degree. Being realistic, the current mania will calm down but given that they are the last NA mid-engine Ferrari and the last Pininfarina-designed mid-engine Ferrari - and the fact that they are relatively on the low side of maintenance and "issues" - I think owning one and ensuring that it doesn't have a bunch of jake-ass modifications or some retina-clawing paint job will pay off in the long run - either if you decide to hang on to it or use it as trade for something else. Will you recoup the full $25K? Unsure - but I would say spending $10K to wrap it is a total waste of money and you will take a double-hit - 1) the $10K spend for the wrap and 2) the resale hit when you disclose it is a wrap AND a wrap over a color only Stevie Wonder would like :) So for me I would either paint it or keep it and drive it at 2am when nobody sees you and then take the single hit on the color when you trade it. The other way to look at it is you mentioned to got the car at an attractive price due to the color so one could argue that investing the money in the paint job just brings you back to even but you have a beautiful car in a proper and original color that you can enjoy and you don't have to stress about it if/when you trade it or sell it.

One way or another you own a 458 Spider which is not a bad problem to have :) :)

**Are you 10000% sure it is paint and not a matte green wrap? I just cannot imagine someone painting a Ferrari that color but can definitely see someone wrapping in that color - maybe a tribute to military or a military family member etc. - but definitely not paint - I would just make 1000% sure.

    Cheers :)

I saw that car and totally thought it was wrapped in OD Green. The listing even said Rosso Corsa. I would love to hear the full story of how it ended up that way. The price was a good deal . . . in today's market.

Yes, honestly the dealer was really great and I was happy with the price in that I knew it was an immediate wrap or respray before I even take it home.

Before you paint- have fun with the car. My daughter is an artist and would love to use it as a canvas. Find someone local and have fun and then paint or wrap. May as well enjoy it fully. Lol

Reputable dealer - good to hear! Hey look at it this way - you got an amazing deal on an amazing car when "deals" on 458s are few and far between - so if you put some money into it you are still in good shape - if you don't then just enjoy the hell out of it - when you are driving it the color isn't that big a deal - believe me when that 4th LED shift light comes on and you pull the right paddle you won't know or care what color it is :)

OMG I was wondering if someone was gonna buy that thing. If it's the one that was on JustRed and cars.com. I thought hard (price was attractive) but I also thought "If I buy this, I'm having it trailered straight to the paint shop" and there goes the savings, versus just getting a car with a normal paint job.

I mean it could have been worse. It could have been polka dots. I once saw a polka dot purple airplane.

Over on Rennlist there's a "world's ugliest Porsche" contest, mostly with hilarious images from the configurator. Until someone posted an actual pic of a custom spec car that put all those images to shame. I literally choked on my Glenlivet 18 when I saw that thread.

But seriously though, congrats on the purchase! You have a great car. Just, like, maybe wear sunglasses and a wig when you drive it, so nobody knows it's you? I kid, I kid ;)

Haha, yes I’ve been looking at 458’s for months. Never thought I could get into a Spider at that price.

Don’t worry, I will post photos as soon as that green is no more!

You bought a repainted changed colour Ferrari ? Why ? Especially given the fact you have no idea what prep work was done before painting it green. To me this is the real issue.

IMO I would have stayed well away from it but I guess the price was good for you. Good luck with it.

I have never seen a great paint job unless every part has been taken off the car. 25 K seems a cheap quote. No you will never get it back.

Yes, pure price. $50k less than other listings I’ve seen of the same year and similar miles.

I will enjoy the heck out of it for now (in a color of my choice)… then when the time comes that I can trade it for a newer one the value will be what it will be

Right, so since I won’t get the value back I’m just going to wrap it.

25k sounds very cheap to me.

If you want it in red I would always go for paint instead of wrap.

So red paint or leave as is.. my 2 cents.

Drive it for a while as is and decide then. I love the green.
But I also had a matt-black sports car in the 90s, which a lot of people liked but nobody wanted to own.

As others said for me resale value is compromised anyway: I, for myself, would not buy a totally resprayed car but someone will, for a price that is lower than market, like you did. For me you purchased a car at a low price for a reason, and for the same reason you will have to sell it below market. That will be regardless it will be further resprayed in the original red, or even more in this case, as the car will have been resprayed 2 times, then.
So, in my opinion, you should wrap it or respray it based on what you like, or better: based on the enjoyment return you'll get by having a "red looking" car.
If you'd like to have the car in red, AND you are concerned about resale, you should opt for wrapping, as this will minimise the wasted money, with the same (bad) effect on resale.
Whereas, if it was me, I would not have purchased the car in first instance, but I would leave it as is now, as it looks good to me and saves even the wrapping money.
    I hope it helps...
