What's stopping you from getting a rear spoiler?

  1. No, I would never get one regardless of it's looks.

  2. Yes, I would get one but there just aren't any good looking ones out.

There are some good and some not so good rear spoilers for cars. I am just wondering what stops people from putting one on their car. I tend to think that if one improved the car's appearance that everyone would buy it, but some just won't approve of rear spoilers regardless of it's asthetic appeal.

So tell me what the mood is on rear spoilers, if there was a nice one for your car that most everyone agreed improved the look, would you buy it? Vote in the poll!

You won't find one wing or spoiler or side skirt that everyone will like. And who cares if it does look nice, how will it affect the aerodynamics of the vehicle? What about drag? Weight? Punching holes in a body?

I think it's funny to see so many rice boyz with rear wings on a street drivern, FRONT WHEEL DRIVE car  Remember form and function.

    No.

I haven't seen an aftermarket fixed rear spoiler that looks good (did I miss the point of your poll?). Just get "cheap" stenciled on the doors and save the spoiler $$.

On the OEM side, other than the retractable one on the Porsche 993/6/7 or the stock wings on the F40/50, which are barely street cars, spoilers don't usually help the looks.

I guess I'm trying to find out if you would buy one if YOU thought it looked good.

The only reason I would ever put a rear spoiler on my car
is if I had a problem keeping the rear down at high speed.

I think Spoilers are necessary on some cars, like Mustangs or Camaros, they just look silly (silly-er) without them, the back end just isn't formed well, it's dependent on the spoiler.

I honestly prefer a smaller, upturned lip, like on the back of a 355. It keeps away from a mundane boxy plain crappy uninteresting rear without being obnoxious. Spoilers can be classy, as long as they blend with the lines of the car.

now those giant aluminum unpainted whale-tails are hideous. Not only do they NOT provide traction on the FWD's, they REDUCE traction. Just goes to show how stupid those people are.

I'd only put one on if it was functional to my driving style. They slow you down off the line so it's funny to see them in the midwest which has few turns. I have no use for them on my car; it creates plenty of downforce at the speeds I drive. Plus, it would throw off my handling with too much rear weight bias.

I'm opposed to anything that has no purpose on a puropse built car. Let the ricers have the wings, fake scoops, silly air dams. They shouldn't be on a GT car or sports car unless they add to the driving.

Sorry about that - missed the point.

I like originality, so I wouldn't install one anyway.

Great post. All this stuff is half a notch above those twirling chrome wheel covers on the Cadillac Escapades (unless those help its offroad ability - I'm no expert...)

Yes! The tail of the 550/575 is magnificent. Every time I see one I start to think more and more it's one of the best looking cars ever designed.

Even better, I love a little 'ducktail' - like the 288 GTO, and to an extent the 355. Also the late 60's Camaro!

Yes, but on the F50 GT it was there for a reason and I am quite sure that it was sound in it's aerodynamic tuning.

OK, I'm not sure it's relevence to this thread, but that is ONE FUNNY PICTURE ! ! !
    I am in tears....literally!

I think those Lambos look great....those guys sure have guts!

Now I'm no big Porsche fan, but as another example, I'd have to say this tail is a piece of art. Imagine this car without it! Boring!

I hate spoilers. Even the best of them still look like an afterthought in the design.

See, on the Lambos they look good, because it's in the design of the car. It's the 'stuck on' look that is ugly. BTW, I love the lip on the rear deck edge too ;>)

If it didn't have the tail it'd lift off the road! That tail, and tails/wings that are designed into the vehicle, are fine with me. I agree, it's the 'stick on' units that look bad.

I am aware the picture I posted is a bit off, but I figured if the donkey would have had a rear wing, it might have created enough down draft to keep him down...

I was just laughing to much when I saw this to think straight..

and I am still forming tears...

I think cars like the F50, F40, Porsche GT1... look great with wings because they are part of the whole design and would look wrong without them. I only would consider putting a wing on a car that didnt already have one only if it helped the performance of the car in some way. Otherwise I wouldnt bother because it would probably ruin the design of the car and look stupid.
