I am looking at my first F car and found a beautiful car. It is one owner personal use, being sold by a dealer who bought it at auction. The Carfax shows "Damage reported" and when you check under the incident it just says "Police report - Front Impact with Pedestrian", there is no other info.

The car has been put on a rack and inspected, there is no sign of any repairs being done on the car. Meaning this may have only been reported due to the police coming to the aid of the pedestrian, and has nothing to do with damage on the car if I understand correctly. I am not so much worried about the current condition on the car, I am more worried about if I sell the car ever, having that accident mark on the Carfax might come back to haunt me. Would love thoughts on this, thanks!

Yes, it will come back to haunt you when you sell the car, but then you are paying less for the car than you would if it did not have an accident.

While I have no issues with buying cars with a minor story or two, this one is Possibly a little gruesome so I would pass.

I’d pay more. Depends on who it hit

What's the discount from market value on it? Its a 'story' car now, even if you don't care, its going to be an issue at resale. I'd be looking for a 10-20% discount. If they can provide (or you can dig up) some more documentation on what exactly happened that might make it less if it wasn't a big deal or more if it killed someone or something.

Wonder if the air bag(s) were triggered, too. That also might be a big deal, depending.

I doubt it killed someone, it seems the only reason it was even reported was from the police report about the incident. There are no signs of any repairs ever being done on the car, so it was either top notch work, or there was no damage. Car is 10% below market.

I don't believe the airbags deployed, if they did, everything has been repaired to the point where you can't tell anything ever happened.

There is a chance it was a person who saw a fancy car and pretended like they got bumped into in a way to extort money and the police came etc...

Sometimes you can get a copy of the police report.

What kind of car is it? First thing I thought of was this video from a few years back:

If everything else is right about the car, I say buy it. Plus, the older it is, the less relevant the carfax is imho (many will disagree). But if anything else is wrong with the car, then let it go - big difference b/t 1 and 2 strikes on a car.

A car isn't a house, so a pedestrian being tapped is not like someone dying in the guest bedroom in a house you're looking at - it's not going to be haunted, lol

Context is king here. Was a 'tap' or injury? If you're serious, get a copy of the police report.
If serious impact, no, given the the bad mojo. If it was minor, - I would get it if the price is right AND I have a copy of the police report to substantiate for any future buyers.

Yeah? Okay so it sells less when you sell it, but you are also going to pay less when buying it. You aren't the one that hit someone, and its not like the car ran into the Twin Towers or something.

Police report can't be located it was never imaged. None the less it is a mark on the Carfax. It is exactly the spec I want in the color I want. I even searched for news articles on the day where it happened locally to see if anything was written about the incident. The incident seems to be a ghost, a long with any damage. The car was briefly in New York at the time, so I can only imagine a person crossing a crowded road gets bumped, they call police just to be on the safe side, now the car has a scarlet letter. That's best case scenario. Flip side it could have sent 12 nuns into cartwheels down the interstate

Well it comes down to how long you intend to keep the car. If it's one or two years you're going to get less than similar cars without a story. If you are keeping it 10+ years, it won't mean squat.;)

If you are pretty sure it happened in New York, I believe police reports are a matter of public record in that state. They might be able to easily find it if the report is searchable by VIN.

Was the pedestrian rotund enough to dent the hood? Did they just exit a Quickie mart with slurpie in one while eating a hot do in the other? If so definitely. Aboslutely pay more. That lets me say "I'll run your *** over like the prior owner". Total cache.

Who is to say that the person that got hit wasn’t on their way to commit a heinous crime that day? This Ferrari may have stopped that.

In Texas, this would get you bonus points. You get extra if they are on a bicycle. Smashing a Tesla gets you a Governor's Accommodation.

I was recently looking at the perfect, for me, 488. The only issue was the carfax showed a front end accident. The car was repaired very well and Ferrari Approved. The car was a tiny amount below market. I decided that I didn’t want to take a hit when selling. So I passed.

If you are ok buying a car with prior damage and was repaired correctly then I don’t see the difference in terms of type of impact, whether it be human or deer or car.
