Thank you for that! The more research I do on the subject, the more I find sound tuning to be complex to achieve desired results outside of simply quieting sound. Muffler box size and shape matters as sound bounces off the walls. Even exhaust tip design can change or enhance a sound. Ex. Trumpet shape tip increases velocity and sound.
Here are some cool variations of a muffler box by Saclam (Japan). They offer a few sound tuning variations of the same box. Unfortunately, have never seen or heard a car running this muffler. Nicely made with an OE look to it. Much better quality than OE of course. http://www.saclam.com/short_topics/f355haikikan/f355haikikan.html Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Someone posted this a few weeks ago, but the photos make it a lot clearer. Thanks! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just to confirm, the non-bypass exhaust flow is something like this? Image Unavailable, Please Login Only one side shown.
I have always wondered if there is a difference between 2.7 and 5.2 internals. Excluding the version without the hump (which is in certain markets). When I installed a 5.2 muffler with the thermocouple bung capped on my 2.7 it sounded notably better than my stock 2.7 muffler. Externally the only difference is part number and the addition of the bung.
Here is before and after modd. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
My guess is you’ll get louder, but won’t get much F1 wail. To get the wail, bypass route needs to be directed straight to the tips.
I will use Y pipe without cats and will replace oem lover cats with 100cpi so all together will be much louder
I actually disagree, The twin sound lets the bypass go straight out the tips. Which I believe you had one too, mine was crazy loud but not much F1. The regular capristo, the bypass dumps into the common area, I think the sound comes from the shape and size of the chamber and the loudness comes from the lack of perforations in the pipe
I believe we are in agreement . I never had the twin sound as I always knew there was a sacrifice in F1 wail for power. I had a regular Capristo 3 and now a Capristo 2. What I meant by “bypass directly routed to the tips” is in attached photos. I think if we open a Capristo, we’ll see something along these lines instead of a dumping into a center chamber like the OE muffler. I could be wrong. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Considering there’s not that much in there I’ve never understood how they managed to make the standard muffler weigh so much! It’s not even that great quality but weighs a ton (for what it is)
When people refer to the Capristo 2/3 ...is that some sort of hybrid if the two? I see it mentioned a lot. Or is that referring to both, the 2 and the 3? I want the high pitch F1 scream with as much low end rumble. What's the best from your guys experience?
The number denotes the sound level when the bypass is closed. 1-3 is level 1 sound (stock like) when closed and level 3 when open. They are all the same up top. It’s prior to bypass opening that the level makes a difference. There are other factors to consider when selecting the level. 2.7 or 5.2, spider or coupe, cats or no cats etc. The sweet spot is the 2/3 which is a special order. The most sold version is the level 3/3 but in my experience is not the best sounding.
Elliot nailed it. Basically all standard capristo's sound exactly the same at wide open throttle/bypass open. There are differences in the sound when the bypass is closed. One being quiet and three being loud. I assume it's just how much of the pipes inside our perforated versus sealed. I mentioned in the other thread, that I am running a capristo with a capristo bypass valve controller. It allows me to open and close the valve whenever I want. In my opinion, a 1-3 sound with the controller is hands down the best system for the 355. It's quiet if you just need to stroll around the neighborhood, and with the valve open it sounds glorious at all throttle settings. I actually like the partial throttle sound with the valve open more than the F1 scream at the top end. Here's the plate off my old TS, they're all marked like this
I think my eventual setup will be something like the following then: Tubi headers High flow cats Capristo stage 2 Electric bypass control In a Berlinetta... Check engine lights come on though with valve open?
