Alright, I am 99% committed to buying this car tonite... 1988 930. Andial modified motor. Lots of body mods (at least I think its aftermarket): 962 turbo front and rear bumpers/wing. Has fins/slots on rear wheel arch for brake cooling (metal - seem original?). 50,000. Car is somewhat unloved. SALVAGE TITLE 10 years ago (left front hit). Car was repaired, but still pulls a bit to the left. My plan is to make it a weekend beater/DE car. Car is a 6/10 at 5 feet away. Drivers door aligns 1/2 inch off. Left front wheel half inch back in wheel well. Paint is tired, bbs wheels, leather interior, some kind of high end stereo. The motor has an andial intercooler and some other Andial bits - supposedly rebuilt by Andial in the past. Airbox is missing, has some kind of K&N filter on there. Oil tank breather is just a rubber tube with a crankcase vent on it... So, basically owned/maintained by someone who couldn't afford it... Car ahd "Ruf" badging all over the place. Motor runs well... muffler was replaced by cherry bombs... I know... sounds like a rat. It is fast as heck though... and its CHEAP>>>> I wouldn't even begin to consider this car under normal circumstances... but God is it cheap... Questions... 1) If I had to part it out, what do you figure the motor/trans are worth? 2) Can some frame wizard get the thing to run straight? Did I mention its ungodly cheap... What do you figure its worth?
rat? hell sounds like a blast. i am / was looking for a slopenose turbo look 911. been really wanting to just get a slope 930. problem is some are 25k, others are $49k. very hard to get a feel for a good car and a fair price. i really wanted to stay around $22k, and then sort the car when i got it. there is one on the west coast i am really thinking of. need to do a PPI i guess. please post some pics and impressions if you get your car, i think you have a great attitude about it, and i wish you miles of smiles. drive the piss out of it!
Engine not running is worth $4-5K USD......transmisison is worth $2K.......the rest can be sold whole for $3-4K for parts.
Find a very good body shop with a computer chassis machine. Even old school chains and bars hanging can find a twist in the tub. Just make sure who is checking is older and not relying on the computer as a crutch. This is going to be a hooligan car so asthetics be damned. It can be tweeked and shimmed to go straight. This is going to be a fun no worries car...perfect. I rebuilt a 1976 930 18 years ago for a customer. He ran it hard and it was ran hot. Fixed all that and replaced the warm up pressure regulator that was making it run too lean. Reground the cams to the 911SC profile. He said it ran stronger than new. Then after 6 months he wrapped it up in a chain link fence. Last I heard it was still in his barn. That car was quick. Would run out 1st gear in a short city block hitting somewhere between 50 and 60mph. Now that would be a fun car if bought for the right price.
why not just tell us the $....??? I don't even follow these cars, but an 88' 930 salvage w/ questional body work and emblems should be priced at somewhere near $18K....with all the mods you metion, do you honestly know its a ture 930 car or some mogeral patched together turbo look car w/ built motor and optimistic badging...?? Just asking.
Alright... Bought the car ! I feel sorry for the guy who sold... very nice 30 something year old, bought it on a whim 2 years ago. He paid $17,000, and put $2000 into it immediately for silly stuff (electric seats don't work, etc)... He is not the mechanic type... I paid $7000 for it . I love this bad economy ... The car really ain't that bad...I am very excited... Here is what I know so far, pics to come over the weekend... Car had some left front hit, 10 years ago based on carfax - salvaged. It doesn't look too bad under the body. Looks like the left front quarter panel was replaced, a couple seems were shoddily welded - I will redo those. Left door is a 1/4 inch off at the rear, a small washer at the hinges should fix that... At highway speeds, car pulls slightly to the left. Also noticed during braking. Need to check the suspension bits. Car has gold bbs wheels - not my favorite, kuhmos, 80% worn. The wheels look "small" for the car, but it might be my perception. I think the PO went low profile, but didn't chage the rims. Car rides at stock height. How difficult is it to lower??? Windows tinted black - that has to go Car isn't a slant nose...regular widebody with slats in rear arches...fiberglass, I think... Body kit was well done...holding up... It looks like it has the C2 body kit on it front and rear. Seller does have the original front and rear bumpers in storage - he said they were not trashed... Supposedly the car was in a parking lot accident... Perhaps someone did back into the left front wheel? I didn't see any welds/patch panels in the front trunk. Hood aligns properly, as do all of the seems...Body about a 7/10. No dents, just scratches. Will see what it looks like after buffing... Zero rust of significance... Motor has andial intercooler, cat bypass. SSI intact. Some kind of home brew (I think) cheesy bomb type muffler. Welding looks well done... Can't tell what kind of turbo yet. PO was told 2 years ago it has SC cams, "internal work", top end and tranny rebulit 5000 miles ago. No reciepts, but lots of new gaskets seem to substantiate that... Motor runs like a champ...zero smoke... lots of small micellaneous oil leaks... Tranny works very well, zero grinding, smooth. Clutch feels good... Airbox is gone. Replaced by a cheesy K&N intake... any Idea what a used intake runs? Interior looks good. Carbon fiber accent package, full black leather...SONY stereo, didn't look for amps. Radio reception is ziltch... not sure if its hooked up, haven't played with it... The car needs TLC, detailing, etc. I am really hoping that the alignment issue is fixable. The wear on all of the tires is even, suggesting geometry is ok... Air pressure is totally out of whack. LF tire 20psi. RF 22 psi. LR 15 psi (!!!). RR 25 PSI. That alone may explain it! Airconditioning intact, blows warm... Questions for the cognescenti.... 1) Motor makes tons of orchestrated popping sounds on decelleration. I find it irritating. Porsche sites suggest this is normal in modded 930 motors, especially with an open exhaust... thoughts? 2) How do I check the turbo boost? Gauge sits at zero cruising at 3000 rpm. Only rises when the pedal is to the floor. Different than my 944 turbo experience. The car has very little lag... 3) Oil? 20/50 in a modded motor, or thinner? I'm pretty giddy here. This car was cheap. Parts alone have to be more than $7000. Heaven forbid the frame is really tweaked (which I don't think it is), I have seen rolling tubs sell for $1500... Thoughts ?
VIN is for a 930. All numbers match. Its not a real RUF, just has the badging. It is a mongrel, and was unloved... Insurance agent ran the VIN too... said it has the highest "risk" rating he has ever seen... Testarossa was a 60. This car was an 87 (don't know the scale)... This car is not perfect...but it was CHEAP. I figure the ANDIAL intercooler and turbo ar worth several grand...
A non running motor is that much? Gee... than a running one must be worth a bunch more . Thanks for the info...
That can't be right? I always though that the BBS wheels were low demand items... did I mention that they are gold ? ... I am missing the center caps too...
I love that the car has been used...a lot... I feel like I can drive it and park it... The Testarossa is much to nice too just leave outside...its the garage queen... I can't wait to tinker with this car! The seller only advertised the car on craigslist. Not really the best place to sell a 930, IMHO. Thats where all of the cheap b*stards hang out ...
Yep...........the crankshaft, cylinder heads and case halves are worth that much as used pieces assuming no damage to the crank journals, and the case hasn't been shuffled/warped or been cracked and welded in it's lifetime...........the rest of the bits are just paperweights. You don't want to price out the cost of the new pieces from Porsche.......... The popping and spitting sound on the overrun is wonderful.......and old 911's that have been hit in the front end are usually very difficult to repair correctly in terms of getting the thing to align, and fall into spec when cross measured underneath. I think this may be your problem. Lowering is about 6 hours labor plus an alignment. So $1K +/-......... The used intercooler is worth about $1K and the turbo $500-750 max. These things do not build significant boost until 3,750 and up depending upon the turbo and the cam profiles. For $7K you are safe.
A 944 turbo (951) boost gauge starts at 1 bar (atmosphere). A 911 turbo (930) starts at "0" (like it should) and as mentioned above it will take a bit of RPM before it comes off that. So it sounds like its working as designed. Cool enuf car. How about photos.
Heck, grab a foot pump and inflate everything to recommended pressure or 35 lbs (whichever comes first), take another run, and report back. At those pressures, you are going to skew all over the road under acceleration or braking. For $7k, I certainly don't think you went anywhere near wrong...
Well, haven't had a chance to do anything... This weekend I will air it up, and report back... KDS... the popping sound... you like that? Sounds a bit "ricer" to me... Any way to tone it down? Someone suggested the decel valve may have been removed... this is normal?
