Yes. His wife June was there too. Traded some war stories going to lunch with him next week. Building parts so that amputees can ride. Working at Garouttes' shop in San Rafael, near my airport.

He's not. Motorcycle racers are short.

Cool beans. I remember following his chase for the national title in 1969, which wasn't that easy to do back in those days from Urbana, Illinois. I seem to recall he was the Rodney Dangerfield of national numbers, nobody ever gave him much respect.

So say hi to him for me. Let him know that there still are those who remember.

Those of us that knew him, understood how talented he was. We shared a mechanic, Para O'Siocian, who left Ireland the day before his Oral Exam for his PhD in Physics. Got into a fight with his Dad, and didn't go home for 30 years. A major piece of work, but boy was he talented.

If you remember, ask him about another racer. A young guy, who was a bit wild (weren't they all), who quit when he was at the top of his game and moved to Alaska. Damn, I can't remember his name. I remember seeing a picture of him being about as strung out as someone can be deep into a mile corner.

I just found it on Wiki -- Mark Brelsford. Did he ever get back in the game?

No. He did make the news when he came out about 5 years ago. It was him in the poster 'It don't come easy' the bike coming out of a fireball. Was a crash at Daytona 1968, 69 or so. He got hurt in that crash and was never competitive again.

Good to hear. Wish Mert well. Those guys back in the day had to be some of the bravest men on the planet.
