Hello friends. I have determined which pins in the switch I need to use to activate the exhaust valves, but I cannot figure how to wire the switch up to be illuminated. Does anyone have any advice? I am using an OEM sport switch. TIA.

Not 100% sure of the internal wiring of the switch, but I suspect it is something like this:

You'll only get power on the yellow/red (GR) wire with the sidelights/headlights turned on. Were you expecting it to illuminate when the switch is turned on?

Perhaps you can help me confirm the wiring?

    Thanks.

(EDIT: The connector graphic shows the pin numbers as viewed from the side with the metal contacts, not the wire side. Looks like I've messed up the colours in the graphic, but the pin numbers should be correct)

It's a useful exercise to understand the pinout of the digital switches however the way the exhaust valves are controlled isn't how you'd expect.

The engine ECUs themselves manage the valves opening and closing so there is no direct signal from any button.

The sports button for example is wired directly to a spare gpio pin (general purpose input/output) on the Magneti Marelli dashboard. This then allows it to activate the dash lights to show your in sports mode or not. The signal on which mode your in is required by several systems including suspension, automated transmission control (TCU) and engine management ignition ECUs. Instead of wiring additional pins between all these ecus and potentially more the engineers decided to broadcast the sport mode signal over a CAN bus message. Then anyone interested ECUs can read the message and interrogate the state (on or off).

The later spec post 2003 engine ECUs programming depending on the model year (early cars didn't do this, they only had to make do with a single map) had multiple maps for exhaust valve regulation. The work on % torque requested (from your throttle pedal) and also the engine rpm your currently at. With the signal from your sports button it will switch to a sports exhaust valve map or the standard map. Both operate the valves at different opening points.

I have developed tools to allow these maps to be personalized alongside the programming to tailor many other aspects of your driving experience including throttle sensitivity, improved performance and many other functions. In this way for example you can retrofit existing sports button to open valves all the time or only after say 1% throttle .. which is basically the same except they close at idle with no driver inputs which is a better version of a basic exhaust valve controller. If you need more information let me know.

Perhaps Aaron can clarify his intentions. I was assuming he was wiring the SPORT switch in parallel with the normal system.

Strange... The 2003 wiring diagrams I have seem to be missing this connection. I see the SPORT switch hooked up directly with the Suspension ECU. I see an orange/white and a green/yellow wire going to the Instrument panel from the Suspension ECU, but it's not clear of their functions. They go to pins 12 and 17 on the instrument panel 20 pin connector. I assumed one was for the SPORT light. No idea what the other one does. Comparing this with the F430, pin 12 is unused, pin 17 has the odd label "Suspension check to electronic check".

I assumed the OP.waa using the switch to control a "exhaust valve controller" like a Forza

This is something a few people have done already .. not interfering with cars wiring ..only that of the third party controller

In this case though OP wants to have backlight work so he will have to patch into dash wiring as Ian laid out

    No your right..

I'd forgotten, the Suspension ECU actually gets the sport mode switch input, it then relay's the signal to the Instrument cluster which in turn converts it to a CAN message for any ecu's listening on the CAN bus like TCU.

    Suspension ECU:
Pin 9 RACE mode switch Digital input (From Sport Button)
Pin 15 RACE mode signal Digital output (To Instrument Cluster)

    Instrument Cluster:
    Connector C
Pin 12 RACE mode switch Digital input (From Suspension ECU)

Thanks, Trev. That hookup suggests that pin 5 is normally connected (internally) to pin 2 (fixed earth) with the switch not selected. Perhaps Aaron can confirm this.

I'm just wondering why they bothered to add an external jumper wire (on the connector).

That will make my switch internals look messier:

Might be easier to use the unused on US rear fog light switch combined with Steve Bisset's or Fabio's bypass controller. But you would need to get one of the stickie guys to change the gutless blank switch for a two position switch. They are already doing that and putting various exhaust symbols on the face.

Thank you for all the feed back. To clarify my intent, this is going in a 2008 F430. I have an aftermarket Tubi valved exhaust running the Forza valve bypass module. The Forza module can open the valves with a supplied remote, or you can hardwire a 'switch'. I chose to use the 360 SPORT switch since it meets the SPST criteria and matches the other switches. I ended up figuring out the proper wiring configuration to get the switch to illuminate when the headlights are turned on (see attached). I also tapped into the pre-wired foglight harness to get the supplied headlight switch source along with a ground. It worked perfect and did not requite ANY cutting of the factory wiring, dash, car, etc. It was a lot of work, but well worth it.

I went through the firewall using the factory wiring grommet behind the driver’s seat, then under the door sill up into the dash.

And the fog light harness was just hanging behind the dash ? That was a pretty good score

Forza should offer an option to purchase this hard wire switch plug and play. Nice work.

Why using a Forza module if you want to command the valves via a switch ?
A $50 electrovalve and some length of vacuum hoses will do the job

Delve into the software domain and you don't even need to fit anything yet you get significantly more fine grain controls. You can apply a "software" valve controller :)

The exhaust valve maps are fully configurable and significantly more advanced than any aftermarket valve controller as they also take into consideration engine conditions. For instance load (%) and rpm (revs) so they can open exactly how you like. E.g. 1% throttle and 1,500rpm the valves snap open in Sport or Race mode, 50% throttle and 4,000 rpm and then they open in Normal mode, in fact the maps are totally flexible and configurable to exactly how you like. I can even revise the logic so that at your highway cruising speed after given time period (e.g. >10 seconds) in the steady state of driving in any given given gear (not fluctuating by -/+ 1000 rpm) the valves close and stay there until you apply +20% more throttle in less than a given threshold of time (e.g. overtaking). That way you can deploy aggressive race maps and still settle back into a relaxed cruise and intelligently your car can "detect" this using the above conditions and close the valves for you automatically. There are any number of parameters you can use to decide how advanced (or simple) you want this to behave.

For example you can have race mode always open (i.e. 0% throttle at ANY revs and its open, so in other words open in race) and then in normal mode its closed. Then you can just flick the switch and go from open to closed when you want without any aftermarket bolt on's. Entirely in software. No Bolt on's!

I would personally also never keep the exhaust valves closed at approaching max rpm's as on a 360 as this places significantly higher loading on the shafts of the Cam timing variators which is an increased risk of failures. This was a "bug fix / lesson" learned by Bosch when they introduced the F430's, at ANY point at the high RPM's the valves fly open to protect the engine components regardless of if your driving mode.

    Hi Trev.

Of course it can be done by remapping the S/W but :
    - not everybody can do that
    - still, I prefer to have a manual control for opening the valves all the time, and to keep the S/W mapping I have as it is (Sport exhaust + CS mapping) for the rest of the day. Even in Race, I don't want to have the valves open continuously.

One cool mod could be to connect a switch to an unused input of the ECU, and to modify the S/W, so that the valves can be opened all the time via the S/W. Best of both worlds ...

No need to even re-wire the harness connector anymore. I can program into the software ability to interpret additional CAN messages in either direction now to do whatever I want wit that data including Exhaust Controller. So If you connect a CAN line based switch (just line the Manettino switch) to the CAN bus off the back of the OBD port I can listen for it and then do whatever you want.

Hint: Bypassing the ecu control of the exhaust valves isn't very clever as its torque modelling gets upset so your far better cooperating with it than overriding it.
