    The cigarette lighter is always hot so keep parasitic current draw in mind.

    I don't think that splicing this to the lighter wires instead of the ashtray I'm removing would make that much of a difference, or would it?

    To be safe, connect the light blue wire (fused battery power) to the red wire and the black wire to the black wire.

    There is a 3rd wire (yellow/red) on the OEM lighter for backlighting power when the lights are turned on. Does the Amazon power outlet have any lighting?

    David, this spot behind the driver's seat is best for connecting such a 12v Aux adapter.
    It is also AFTER the electronics for the dash which is quite sensitive incase your load is great (like a 12v air compressor, 12v electric jack).
    That is where my install is and I also use it for my trickle charger

    It has no lighting, just the red and black wires.

    X marks the spot on the pic I posted earlier.
    That terminal comes from the battery and on it's way to the Starter
