I had my mechanic pull the wiper motor/gearbox to inspect and re-grease since they were slow, and now he's having other issues. It seems once the lobe on the gear strikes the contact, the wipers stop instead of returning. Anyone have any clues as to what is wrong?

David...I fixed my first wiper motor about 40 years ago, the two most popular fixes since then were electrical ground issues and timing. Almost all wiper motors work on using a ground somewhere for either power or shutoff, if you are testing on a bench you won't get the proper operation. Second, if you had it apart to clean and grease, I hope you made a witness mark to make sure the gear assembly went back in the same way.
Otherwise, it is a dc motor with a reed switch to add an extra "on" cycle. And while you have it off, spend the extra time & clean/lube the wiper linkage & blade pivots also.

I custom wired my Lotus tarmac rally car with a later wiper motor and couldn't get it to park - the earth wire was lost in a tangle of wires and wasn't grounded. Usually, you notice this only after spending many hours removing and examining it
