Hey there, I've come across quite a few opinions about how well car window tints work in keeping the interior cool and protecting it from the sun. I'd really appreciate it if someone could break down the differences between dyed, metalized, carbon, and ceramic tints for me. I'm aiming to choose the one that can effectively combat the heat during scorching summers and, at the same time, shield the interior from sun damage.

In addition to that, I'm also curious about the potential impact of window tints on visibility, especially at night. Could you shed some light on how different tints affect visibility in various lighting conditions? This extra info would be a big help as I weigh my options.

I'm certainly not up on the latest tinting technology. However, as someone who has tinted a number of their own car windows over the years using professional window tinting film, I will say that usually having your car windows tinted by others can be risky at best. The issue is this: to do a really professional quality job (at least when using film) you almost have to remove the windows at some level (especially the side windows). This usually means a person under the age of 30 will be attempting to figure out how to dismantle the door panel on your Ferrari. Not good, usually. I don't care how professional the man with the clip board is that gives you the sales pitch, once you leave your Ferrari will be most likely turned over to someone with a criminal record and a pry bar.

I recall some years ago, a buddy of mine bought a nice Mercedes AMG something or other. He promptly took it to "his friend that's gonna hook him up on window tinting" so they could tint the windows. Yeah, they tinted the window all right. They also permanently destroyed the clips which held the window / lock panel down to the door panel. When he pointed it out to his friend, everyone just pointed fingers at each other. "Must have been like that". Maybe.

As far as visibility, especially at night, believe it or not when you put tint over all your windows (depending on the percent level) you can't see jack. It's like when you flip your rear view mirror down and everything is dim, but it's like that on all the windows now. Even relatively light tint will have this effect. It makes night driving a hassle, especially when quickly attempting to merge or change lanes at night.

One time I got the brilliant idea to tint my side quarter windows at 5% (which means it blocks 95% of the light). Looked super cool from the outside, but driving was a nightmare (especially at night) because you could no longer see cars next to you. Also, as someone who almost became a police officer, I can tell you that nothing jumps out at an officer of the law more than a car with tinted windows (especially side windows). Granted, a Ferrari with window tint isn't going to trigger "probable cause" as much as a lowered Honda will, but it does make you blip on the radar a touch more.

In my opinion, very, very light tint looks best. I don't know the exact percent, but in my experience there is nothing worse than going too dark and being stuck with it.

The 25 year old version of me loved tinted windows. Now that I'm coming up on 60, I just wanna be able to see where the F I'm going.

Ceramic tint is your best option meaning that you can have the lighter tint that won't hurt your visibility in the day or at night time.
I would go with ceramic tint 75 on the windshield and 35 or 45 on the 2 side windows. Most shops have different sample tints display on a heated lamp that can test the heat and you can feel through the sample glass. Hope this help.
    Good luck!

One thing I forgot to mention is that Ceramic tint will block the most heat than any other tint variants at the lighter shade.
