Just watched Today Tonight. Big story still gathering pace about motor dealers who should know better than to get caught winding back odometers. Now, I am not naive to think that this does not go on, but the main villain in the story tonight is a Registered Ford dealer. Not sure for much longer!

I would be pretty pissed off to find I had bought a car that had been wound back. Maybe I am a little trusting, but would have been more inclined to expect this in a private sale scenario.

The way these current affairs programs are, it makes a change from their usual crap reporting about:
    - diets
    - little black dresses
    - latest swimwear for women
    - the one size dress
    - the perfect pair of jeans
    - how much fat in everyday fast foods
    - hidden cameras in mechanics workshops etc etc etc etc

its well known that more private owners wizz the speedo then dealers, the ones that get sped the most are back yarders buying high k cars from the auctions.

If you get a proper check done on the car you wont be caught out.

One would think that you shouldnt have to do that with a dealer though as its highly illegal.

Also, with modern cars, the mileage is stored in the TCU and cannot be changed.

So the speedo may say one figure, but if you have the car serviced and its data downloaded you can get the TCU reading. TCU is Transmission Control Unit.

We had the a similar story here last week on TT or ACA. In this case it was a second hand car dealer. The guy charged from memory $100 to wind the speedo's back.

Like many of these crooks they aren't very smart and they got tricked to winding back the speedo of the TT/ACA car and of course all caught on TV.

A guy I know got caught recently doing this.

It's not worth the fine and the police record you inherit, IMO.

I agree....it's sad but true, but people will do funny things for money, esp if there's desperation involved too.

and if you swap the TCU with a second hand one from a wrecker?

in the end its all about presentation of the car, and driving it will show if its an ex cab or "only driven on sundays" car

No need to swap anything these days.....
Regardeless of the make or model of car, there are only a few different makes of "odometer" IC's that record the mileage the car has travelled.
By the very nature of their design, these I.C.s can be "updated" because that's what happens when they are recording the distance travelled.
There are many relatively inexpensive universal speedo chip programmers available from overseas that clip directly on the I.C that allow one to alter the mileage stored in the chip.

I think it happens more frequently than people think.

I can only speak for Ferraris; but would not be surprised if it applies to most makes- the mileage is also recorded in the cars ECU's with a whole boat load of other info. You might be able to change the visible odometer reading; but the real mileage can still be read from the cars ECU's using the SD5 computer.

As Brenton says, a test drive and an experienced eye can tell the mileage from things like interior wear, screen sandblasting, pedal wear etc etc.

The chip can be in the ecu, doesn't have to be in the speedo / odometer ( which in some cars functions just as display device). Re the Ferrari, I recall that the SD allows limited reduction of odometer readings anyway, so the chip is definately re-programmable)

Asia and central europe are the main sources of the equipment required to do this

Really any car without a verifiable service history is a candidate, even more so if there is a premium for a low mileage car ( as is the case with most exotics).

In a lot of modern cars the speedo is just a display device, the "counter' is in the car's ecu. So it will still count if the speedo ( instument panel) fuse is pulled.
On the other hand, it won't count if the fuse to the ecu is removed but then the car won't run either :) )
