It’s pay-walled. Let me guess: flat plane crank, equal length headers (the most important element), and high revs? Equal length headers can make anything sound great.
Yeah, but this was the interesting part: "The fourth order is another name for the dominant frequency produced by a running V-8, so called because the frequency is four times the frequency of crankshaft rotation. (The sound a four-cylinder makes is a second order, a six-cylinder a third order, and so on and so forth.) What I find particularly interesting is that eighth order. You can calculate the eighth order frequency by using the same formula to determine dominant frequency, but just multiply your engine speed in hZ by eight. In the case of an engine of any cylinder count spinning at 3000 rpm, you get an eighth order frequency of 400 hz. With both our Z06 and F355 V-8 at 3000 rpm, the 200 hz fourth order and 400 hz eighth order blend to provide an octave, the same note at two different frequencies. (Think "do-re-mi–fa-sol-la-ti-do," if we want to relate this back to Western 12-tone equal temperament.)" He posits the emphasis on the 8th order where most other (including other Ferrari flat plane) v8's emphasize the 4th is why it has a more unique sound. Also probably what Capristo, Kriesseig etc. try to emphasize even more. He didn't get into exactly how, but it's probably the 4-2-1 (on bypass) exhaust config the 355 has and others don't - they are mostly 4-2.
There is some overthinking in there. It's only the controllable cross pipe (with the valve) that makes the sound what it is. The drawback is increased back pressure which Ferrari obviously took note of when on the 360 and later models they separated the flow of both banks to improve performance but lose the high pitch sound that we all love. Nothing more, nothing less, in my view at least.
Probably the pre-cats, high pitches are more vulnerable to interruption and less are making it through two separate iterations of converters.
The 360 is a great sounding car as well. This all probably has to do more with a low cc motor than anything else.
I am not familiar with the various aftermarket exhaust systems for the 360 but from what I can see the Kreissieg version, probably used in the video above, adds a cross pipe to the set up which is not there with the stock and also some aftermarket exhaust set ups.
