Here we go again with the "A/C needs recharge" bit. And I really don't like the ABS light. Fix this **** - and seller will have no excuses. Otherwise, the car (looks) gorgeous. Cheers, Hank
Last year he spent the money to put in a new stereo, amp, radiator, hoses, battery, fuse panel, changed the oil and had "complete overall check" done on the car. He spent a lot of money on the car already, why didn't he simply have the A/C "charged" and fix whatever is causing the ABS light to come on while the car was in service? Sounds like he ran into some problems that were too costly to fix, but he did install a new stereo, so you can see where the priorities are with this seller. Or the A/C just went out recently and the ABS light came on too and he decided to sell it rather than fix it. A/C could just need a charge or cost thousands to fix. The ABS can run up to $5000 or so to get it sorted. Like Hank says, it is this "A/C needs a charge" sh*t again, if it is that simple then fix it and get top dollar. Belts service was 4000 miles ago, but no mention of how much time has passed since it was done. Might be due for a belt/tensioner service again. This looks like the usual "throw $10k at it and it will be a reliable driver" car. With his starting price of $35k, that makes it a $45k car, Not much recent Ebay seller history either. The mileage looks like it was driven somewhat regularly, which is good for our cars. Garage queens can have a lot of problems from just sitting unused. Alden
This Mondial T had her last "Major Service" in October 2005! Sounds like you may be looking at more than a +10K bill to me.
Given the service history, as well as current issues, I would say its fair to expect to spend at least $10k to get this car fully sorted.
Possibly, if you're a DYIer. Remember, the motor needs to come out to do the full service. No history of clutch work? It's not uncommon for a 3.4 to need one at the 40k mileage point. So that's another $2200 for parts alone.
Wade...."need one at the 40K mileage point"... Clutch would be replaced for the first time at 40K? If so I am unfortunately on an accelerated schedule..... I am on my third at 21K...
Yes, I'm being conservative. I just pulled my pumpkin at 32,000 and still have some good life left. Full service history with no previous replacements.
Currently at 66K on my 85 QV, and still rolling on that second clutch. Having a documented service history on a car is a wonderful thing. Also enlightening: That Clutch replacement, in 1998 included Clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, and new tires cost: $5100. Sid
It's a foreboding (and expensive) question... how many people used their Ferrari to learn how to drive a stick?
By the time most get to a Ferrari - they have probably been a car enthusiast for a while, and should have driven many sticks before coming to the F-Car. Unless of course, they are that rare instance where a parent purchases a new Ferrari for their newly minted driver. Not to change the subject, but I think that an early VW Beetle or Ghia makes an excellent car to learn to drive a stick. Short of throwing a stick of dynamite under the tranny, there's little that a novice can do to hurt the clutch. And if it does happen, it can be changed quickly and cheaply. sid
Not sure about parts, but the t clutch is easy. Right at the back of the car, easily accessible. Labor should be minimal compared to a QV or 3.2. Regards, Jerry
I've spoken to a few non-enthusiasts over the years who bought theirs sight unseen off of ebay knowing nothing about it other than "it's a Ferrari". So I can imagine... But as you suggest, hopefully not.
Hey, pay to play. And a precious memory for your son... "My Dad taught me how to drive a manual in our Ferrari."
I taught my daughter to drive a stick using my Alfa Spider. Cheaper repair bills and we still looked cool while stalling out.
I think part of the problem is the high starting price. From my experience it is better to start with a low price to get some activity and interest. Also, the description raises more questions than it answers. Cheers, Greg
There was one bid at the minimum of 35K now that bid has been withdrawn or disappeared. Ferrari Mondial Mondial T | eBay No bids now and 33 minutes left to go. Alden
I believe the troops have had a positive impact on potential buyers - as regards the negative issues with this car. But what's sad, is that when looking at the stuff we generally look at, this car looked great. But, it got no bids for a reason - too high an opening price - too much smoke - too many mirrors. Cheers, (but sorry) Hank
