Wow, great deal. You say they weren't a big deal then but really they've always been special. If he got one for 18k it sounds more like the seller didn't know what he had. Edit. Ahh ok, I think I misunderstood your post. 10 years ago is when you met him not when he bought the car.
Heggerty value, only back to 2006 Price Guide Report Automobile article from 2009 For sale for $285,000 Collectible Classic: 1967-70 Toyota 2000GT
At an auction - all it takes is two people that really want the car for sale, and have large amount of funds to obtain the car now. And presto - big sale.

There were/are 2 of them. They were NOT convertibles... no tops at all. So I guess they were just roadsters? They were cut down from coupes in just a matter of days for the movie... mostly because Sean Connery could not sit in the coupe... he was too tall. I believe Toyota had Yamaha do the mods... Yamaha actually built the cars and modified the engines anyway (I read somewhere).
Included in Hagerty's Cars To Watch in Monterey: 10 From $100,000 – $1,000,000 http://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/Articles/2013/08/15/Monterey-Auction-Preview
Yep, a photo of this 2000GT mentioned by Hagerty is at the beginning of this thread. It sold for $935,000.
The other one disappeared, and was recently claimed found, but its authenticity has not been established. There are also 2 LHD chopped cars residing in permanent collections in the United States.
One of very few cars that actually looked better in metal than in pictures. I was mesmerized when I first saw one and still think of it as one of the most beautiful cars ever. Is it worth $1M? Probably not, and no car made in 300+ examples probably should be. But then... Mercedes 300 SL is made in more than 3000 examples (Gullwing and Roadster combined) and they are also +1M these days. So answer is obvious: worth of the cars is not a problem. Problem is that $1M doesn't mean much anymore...
