    Seriously...

I can understand watching sports YOU could actually play, or have played, or hope to play. I can even understand watching auto racing (which theorethically one could do). Hell, I even understand watching tennis, or golf on TV.

Watching football really makes little sense, yet so many do it...why?

You can't really believe you will play it!

Most folks won't even play a pick up game for fear of breaking something...

I wouldn't have my kids play it either - most highschool football player's joints are shot by the time they are 40 years old...

I also don't understand why folks watch baseball...unless they just finished watching paint dry and want to slow down the action... :)

Come on...explain it to me. Of interest, I find that most car guys just aren't into sports. True, or not!?

I used to really hate watching any kind of sports on TV. This last year, it just seemed more fun to watch. The broncos, going as far as they did, just made it more exciting. I guess it's the same thing that would attract me to following the markets or maybe it's because you have a team that represents your state/city.

So... all in all ... I have no idea.

Why not watch hockey? Or women's basketball for that matter?

Hell...I will even watch a chess tournamnet on tv, or a pool tournamnet. I even understand watching poker!

    But, why football?

Who cares whether you can do it or not, if you enjoy it, thats all that really matters.....

Its entertainment, its an opputunity to see some excellent athletes play an exciting sport

Do you think that was the mindset of the current NFL players who watched NFL in their youth? Absolutley not

    Its their personal preference!!

People have their personal prefernces on what they like and dont like, many like football--end of story.

P.S. what would you do if someone said--"Why do you like Ferraris, you'll never actually OWN one!"

Football is (to me) like a chess match, where all the pieces have their own ability to fail or succeed based on a huge number of factors. You have strategy (the coaches, coordinators, QB, etc) combined with unbelievable physical ability, and unlike baseball, basketball, hockey, etc, each individual play is it's own battle, yet each has it's own nuances. All 22 players on the field at a time have to not only succeed at implementing the strategy created by the coaches over the course of 7 days of intense study, but each one also has to play with the knowledge (maybe just in the back of their head) that even the smallest failure can destroy what the rest of your team has worked for. Throw in a dash of sometimes questionable referree calls, the occasional bout of flat out luck for better or worse, and you have 3 hours where, in a good game, every single second has it's own importance to the game. Ultimately, it's like watching 2 great generals wage war on each other in real time, yet nobody dies (rarely), and you can root for a side. I do, however, wish they'd stop being such pu$$ies about protecting quarterbacks etc - it USED to be a real contact sport.

And yes, I played when I was in HS so it has a special place even without the tactics, physical battles, etc. On top of all that I'm a Pats fan, so having played, and watching a consumate "team" effort be successful is that much more satisfying to me.

Let's see now. Spend a few hours watching big sweaty men grope all over each other on a grassy field while fighting over an inflated hog hide, OR
watch scantily clad ice skaters like Katarina Witt, Nancy Kerrigan, Oksana Baiul, and others as they do leaps and twirls.

Which would you rather have along for a ride in your Ferrari?

    I have no clue
Watching guys ram into each other for 5 seconds then run back to the huddle is kinda ghey to me.
Though I do love hockey :D

what I dont get is how important certain teams are to some people. Its rather sad when someones life and self worth gets tied up in athletes playing a game for your entertainment. I guess someone elses success is all they have in life, I just enjoy the way certain teams or players paly and entertain me, its hardly enough to make or break my day.

Your arguments really make no sense. You would watch football for the same reasons that somebody else would watch car racing or any other sport, because you enjoy it and you think it is really amazing and fun to watch, not because you're hoping to be a professional player. Why is it less likely that you'll play football than that you'll be a professional racer? And what makes you think people don't play football for fun? My friends and I play all the time, and besides lots of people play, especially around Thanksgiving for example. Football is fun to watch because it is awesome to be amazed by the skills these people have. I don't see why you would watch chess, which can be really slow and boring, and not football, which is fast paced and exciting. Just my $2

Chris is right too, watching the games in a stadium is such a great experience, and it's good to have a favorite team that you can be spirited about and cheer on, same as any other sport.

Dumb: "I'm going to spend all my money and time buying tickets and watching somebody else's million dollar football team".

I guess because from time to time you get a british announcer making a hiliarious faux pas like this:

Which was followed by a few minutes (literally) where the normally composed, solemn british announcers were guffawing with laughter and couldn't get their lines out. My buddy played it for me, and the first time I heard it, I couldn't help but get caught up in the laughing. It still makes my sides hurt when I listen to it now.

Of course, that said, I can't watch any game that lasts for days either ;)

    Its funny.

Cause the whole of Australia reckons that NFL is the pissiest weak type of Football known to man.

If you want "REAL" football, check out the NRL (Aussie Rugby League)

No 15KGS of Body Armor. Its all muscle!
    No huge amount of players.
    Huge Tackles
No Stop in the play (Well just briefly as they play the ball)
    Easier scoring system
    Lots of blood spilling out

    Its awesome!

You're not alone. I find it equally boring and nonsensical.

I was waiting for a plane a few weeks back when the playoffs were going on, and nearly every person on a cel phone in the airport was yapping about who won this game or that game and "so and is a good (insert defensive position here)". I wondered if these people even had lives.

I've always likened football to a little war between cities. We get to see a 3 hour, controlled battle to prove which city is superior.

Every year around the Superbowl one hears this kind of BS remark, somebody trying to appear superior and more intellectual because they're 'not into football.'

    Please --- shut up.

If you really didn't care, you wouldn't have to say anything. You'd just ignore it, like most Americans ignore that world soccer championship thingy.
