I keep wondering about this and maybe you all can explain it for me. I constantly see men have their initials on the sleeve of their shirt on the cuff. Why is this? Are they worried their shirts will get mixed up at the cleaners or is it just cool to let everyone know who you are?

So you dont forget them....same reason why people get their anniversary tattooed on them.

Maybe I am missing the point of your query. A nice initialization is a subtle personalization. I have no issues with it. Admittedly, I don't have any shirts like that but I have bought them as gifts.

Its very british and considered to be proper to have your initals on your shirt. cuff, pocket or lower left side on face of the shir. Mostly on taylor made shirts. This is very classic look. Alan Flusser Dressing the man is the bible for mens classic fashion

I didn't mean it as an insult or that it looks bad. I guess I just don't see women with their initials anywhere but yet keep seeing men with them so I was wondering what the reasoning was because I can't imagine having my intials on my clothing. I've never shopped for men's clothing (well, besides with my brother, but he has the fashion sense of a bum) so I don't know much about it.

Many women have necklace/pendants with their names on them. I don't see a lot of guys with a charm that says "Joey" :)

One thing I don't understand are fashion bags. I understand the bag. I understand why some can be expensive. I don't understand why spend $1400 on a bag that has LV written on it. It takes away from the purity of the material and is blatant advertising.

    Oh well, Venus and Mars...

Names are a big deal I guess. Guys pass their names on to their wives and their children. Having your initials on your cuffs or towels or anywhere else is just a way of "showing off" your name, so to speak. I don't have my initials on anything, but I do have a few cloth handkerchiefs that were my grandfather's and they have a "C" initiled on them - the initial of his last name and mine as well.

It is on the sleeve because on a properly cuffed man, the sleeve can be seen between the wrist and the cuff of the jacket.

It's usually put on by the custom shirt maker for made to measure/su misura shirts. It's fairly common for those shirts to have them. I wouldn't call it ostentatious or anything as its almost always on there and usually pretty discreet. People think its to label the shirt as yours at cleaners, but it doesn't really serve that much of a purpose. no different than a shoe saying "handmade" on the bottom. You might see it, you might not.

Dunno. All my clothes just have little animals on 'em so I know which shirts go with which pants :)

I see it quite often with attorneys I work with and I was just curious about it.

dwhite, maybe I should start asking them if it's so they can find their shirt after the orgies.... :D

I have several custom made shirts with my initials on the pocket. I have also seen them on the left sleeve and the space between the pocket and the buttons. Honestly, I like the look on the pocket. My father had them on the pocket. His father did also. The purpose, I was told, was twofold. First, it identified the shirt as handmade. Second, it assisted with sorting the laundry at the capitol, where they could pick up and return laundered shirts in about an hour so you wouldn't have to go home and change.

My initials are small and in white thread. On white shirts it is almost impossible to see, which is real cool.

As for the contrast with women, they tend to wear flashier clothes, which are expressions of their style and personality. With a blue suit you have to find ways to add style.

Why do men have women tattoo their names on their neck? Same as the shirts - so they don't get lost :).

Women actually have the initials put on the shirts. You lose your shirt you sure as hell are not going to drop by the store and grab a quick replacement.

I have several shirts with initials. The funny part is that sometimes in meetings you will see the guys who do not, when everyone else does. Next week they too have them.

I was just measured for an order of bespoke shirts.........and passed on the monogramming.......I was thinking about getting white letters on the cuff......but decided against it in the end.

now, that's true. I had a man tell me once that every single year for as long as he could rememeber he would buy so many suits of each color, so many shirts of the same variety of colors, and maybe some shoes. So essentially he had been wearing exactly the same few outfits for years. And then you have men like my dad who try to match two plaids because they both have blue in them.....thankfully he's got a wife to help him out.

Personally I'd prefer my name on my clothes than that of some designer. Unless he pays for the ad space:)

On the cuff or pocket is a bit rookie for me.

I was told by SULKA one of the most elite Mens Shops on Park Ave/NYC (tailored JFK, etc) that the "5th Button" was only way. They were bought by Alfred Dunhill in 90s; but their plaque is still on sidewalk in front of the current tenant, Ferrari NY HQ.

On the left front shirt face (at fifth button level, parallel to belt line)
