why are Europeans crazy about Fram HP1 filters??

    I was talking with a engine builder from a shop in the UK who works mainly on Aston Martin and Lotus engines with the occasional Ferrari. He was telling me the locals and most of the Euro mechanics adore the HP1 filters, and that they are "the one to have". My ears were bleeding as the mantra around here is Baldwin or UFI, but hey I am a nobody.

    On the outside, the HP1 looks great. Big intake holes, 20lbs bypass valve, larger holes in the coiled pipe through the filtration media for better flow, but it's still a Fram held together with cardboard. Am I missing something?

    Anyone out there explain this? Is it just a lack of knowledge about these filters or what?

    What a timely thread (for me at least). I just bought a Cobra replica which has a Fram HP1 oil filter mounted. Figuring it was an OCOD (Orange Can of Death) like the other Frams, I've been planning to change it to a Baldwin B253 or a Wix 51515. I do know the HP1 is a racing filter and passes a huge amount--something like 30 gallons--of oil through in one minute. With a flow like that, which is about 3 times the flow of a normal filter, maybe there's no way the thing will fail from too much pressure.

    Is there an authoritative source out there who can offer something other than conjecture?

    Great question Mark. I'm no expert, but from the general poking around the internet, I am finding that the HP1 does have a different internal design all engineered around flowing more. Good or bad, this is what it is and some race motors are running huge psi through these things with good results.

    The Fram HP1 seems to be similar to other "HP1 Performance Filters" per this reference (although the internal construction/materials seems a little cheesy to me -- cardboard, plastic):

    Steve,

    Thanks for posting the link. An interesting and informative study. . . . Think I'll continue to use the Baldwin B253 on my 328. As for the Cobra, I'll replace the Fram HP1 but I'm not sure with what. The previous owner raced the car occasionally and a racing filter made sense in that application. If I want to keep up the racing pretensions with this car I'll switch to a Wix 51515R, which is the racing version of the 51515. But since I'll be using the car only for the street with an occasional autocross thrown in, it would probably make a little more sense to use a filter that actually filters.

    Bear in mind the B253 has a 20lbs bypass the same as the HP1.
