Some nicknames are actually welcomed, especially when some commentators can't even pronounce the names properly and you can't distinguish between MASSA and NASR. I'm looking at you British people. :p

Only people who have a pronounced nasal pronunciation would make MASSA sounds like NASR.
They are more likely to be found in the State than in UK, IMO, particularly among women.
British people speak with their throat.

Which is why the British come up with "Mahssah" and "Nahsahr", using a very soft R on the latter. Given that both drivers have Felipe for a first name, one can appreciate the difficulty during fast-paced commentary or verbal discussion for an exciting F1 race.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Nasr has only been in F1 for 2 seasons (in a race seat). I can only recall 1 exciting race since then.

NASR is an Arabic surname; his family comes from Lebanon.

Vowels are not pronounced in Arabic, but are added when the name is transcribed in an European language.

NASR sounds very much like NASSER when spoken by an Arab, sort of NASS'R but really N'SS'R if that makes sense.

When spoken by American, English comes out like a nasal sound.

Your criticism of pronouncing the names similarly was levied at a nasal or American pronunciation. The British have a different pronunciation but still come up with very similar sounds.

Now you're changing the basis of your argument to look at the origins of names. I have never before hear commentators or fellow race fans conduct an onomastic analysis in order to distinguish between two drivers in conversation. The point stands that the names sound very similar when regularly used by those associated with F1.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

All I've ever heard the commentators (specifically Crofty) is saying he hopes that Nasr and Massa never come into the same team as everyone would be constantly confused.

We did have a similar situation a few years back, when Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell were both driving for Ligier.

It was funny listening to Murray Walker commenting the races, and often getting it wrong!

Check the first GP of 2015 (Australia), he killed it!

Then Sauber went downhill and he was never able to show his talent until this year Brazilian GP. Unlucky guy.

I must say Massa and Nasr are completly diferent for Portuguese, no way you would confuse them....they are as similar to us as jack and Jill for example.
Of course neither Massa or Nasr are Portuguese names, lololo, Brazilian's are well know for inventing names (not in this case)or mixing other ones, so somethimes they get realy crazy and funny names!!

Inventing names? Massa is a traditional Italian last name and Nasr is Lebanese.

At least Americans pronounce words properly. Brits always at Rs that don't exist (Felipe MasseR). Need to learn how to speak their own language
