We have had them successfully repaired by Jeff Lablonde at FJB Ltd. He has also repaired the levelator shocks of the 365 2+2 and 365 GTC/4 along with the production Koni's. His number is 623-566-1628

Keep in mind that the infamous self contained "Loadleveler" used in the carbureted 365 2+2, 365 GTC/4, 365 GT4, and 400GT are a completely different set-up from what was used on the injected 400I and 412. The latter used an engine driven oil pump and a rear anti-roll bar connected height sensing valve to control fluid going into hydraulic suspension struts.

Be careful. There is a huge amount of info on these things on Ferrarichat. Search on the vintage forum and over on www.365gtc4.com Note that the self-contained units on the early cars are different to the 400i and 412 cars. Most discussion is on the earlier self contained units. Most people throw them away and put in either Monroe gas shocks (very cheap option at $100 a pair) or Koni coil-over shocks (about $1500 a pair). I have fixed the earlier types. Good luck.

Tho Nguyen at P&T Engineering rebuilt my load-levelers ( late 400i ). These are the pump driven hydraulic units. He used spring-loaded Teflon seals and made new rubber bumpers, etc. They have been leak-free since 2006.

I updated to full coilover QA1 shocks. Easy conversion and greatly improved ride compaired to old self leveling system. Had to make upper mounts and cap to seal off where mecanical pump was located. I'm still playing with spring rate, I installed 250's but I think a little lighter might be a little better.

I'm about to referb my suspension bushings all around and am concidering all new shocks, also, my 1980400i ser.1 #28903 has normal Koni..it did not come with the adjustable rear suspension, thankfully. Any suggestions on alternative brands? Any and all help is much appreciated as always. Thank you so much...Jacques

A friend in the next town over is having the rear self-leveling suspension in his 1983 series 2 400i replaced with coilovers. I'll report with pictures and cost figures when it is completed.

Just curious, Marc and Jacques, how many miles on your cars?

I know Koni shocks get rebuilt, I have been asked if I want "new ones are to get mine rebuilt" from shops when I had an old Porsche. Sorry I do not have more info. than that.

My 1981 400I came with regular Koni's. Were the load leveler shocks an option?

Thanks Marc. Interesting that I actually saw your car when it was offered for auction by RM Auctions at the Waldorf Astoria in New York in September of 2002. At the time, it had about 27K miles on it.

Hi Ashman...oddly enough I was at that auction and didn't pay any attention to the 412...I was obsessing about something else I think...I'm sure I don't want to know what it sold for then...I believe that the gentleman I bought it from was the one who bought it in 2002...all the best, Marc

You were probably looking at the 1939 Lagonda V12 Rapide Tulip-wood bodied tourer that was bought by Malcolm Pray for a bid of $200K (plus buyer's premium) that day!

If it is any consolation, your 412 was a No Sale with a high bid of $24,000. It was a late addition to the sale and was not catalogued. That, plus the fact that the outside driver's mirror was dangling down off its mount, likely kept the bidding down.

The same car (yours) was reported sold at the RM Monterey auction a year earlier in 2001 for $29,700. It covered 34 miles between that sale and the Waldorf Astoria.
