Well yesterday the alternator put out its last amp, definitely time for a rebuild. Who should I send it to? There is a local shop that I had an alternator rebuilt and wasn't too impressed with the results. Since summer is so short here I need a quality job done with out too much turn time. Thanks.

I remember Ken (SouthJersey400i) & one other person stating that it is very easy to rebuild yourself, all you need is the regulator & brush kit. Supposedly takes just a couple of minutes to perform. Bosch parts, $25-$40. will put you back in service again :D

It took the car to them a long time ago and they just laughed at me!

Seriously, I would try another local vendor...

It's not rocket science, and the chances of a total loss in shipping is a real concern t me, these days...

I, too would be interested in knowing about a proven rebuilder. I would not want the locals working on expensive difficult to access components. They're iffy enough on Chebbie stuff.

I agree with big Tex alternators are easy to rebuild I used to do them in high school on the side. Brushes, regulator, capacitor and maybe bearings. Windings hardly ever go bad. If you work on your own car now I would diys. If you don't work on your car send it out.

My first shop WAS a cigar chomping guy, on lower Washington Avenue, that oddly, drag raced a Corvette!
He eventually sold his place. A shame as it was one of those Old school shops littered with racks of components.

Point being, there was NO "sending it out, need a core charge" BS, he FIXED it!

Now, I take it to grouchy Old Man Finch, on North Sheperd Drive, he's behind burglar bars, has a few big dogs turned lose behind the fence at night..
He does not swap tall tales, like the first example, but he knows our rare Bosch part numbers, and when I tell him:

"It redlines to 7800RPM", he pays close attention to the bearings!
Right now he is overstock on chromed Harley starters....jus' sayin'....

Our Ferrari units have wierd part numbers, you won't find rebuilts at any nationwide Parts Stores....find a local guy you can trust!!

I just had the alternator in my 348 rebuilt yesterday. I use a local shop right down the street for starters and alternators. They've never let me down.

I wouldn't want a parts store rebuild on anything I own-- those things are junk.

We used to have a great local rebuilder who was willing and able to source parts for odball stuff. Saved me a bunch of times when I had my big shop. But he's no longer around and I've dealt enough with what I think is the only remaining local rebuilder to know I don't want them working on Euro stuff, and I doubt they'd want to anyway.

Find an electrical rebuilder who does trucking & heavy equipment. Bosch is installed in a lot of that stuff.

One shop in town. Last rebuild lasted 110 days with a 90 day warranty.

Juan (owner) at Grand Prix Motors in Campbell, CA rebuilt the alternator on my 79 308GT4... He works on Ferraris new and old, but truly specializes in repair and restoration of the older cars. I'm sure he'd take care of you if you were able to reach out and discuss your needs. The only matter is getting it to him and back - I'd imagine FedEx and/or UPS would work wonders in this regard.

    Best of luck!

Was making a note of Perfusion's recommendation (thanks Aaron!) and found this from a previous post: East Coast Auto Electric Home Page

I have not even talked to them, let alone used them, so that's just an FYI and not an endorsement.

Buy a book on the beasts, really simple to rebuild unless there is something horribly bad inside.

Besides, you can make it look good on the outside too...

    Regards, Alberto

Thanks for the recommendations. Not interested in doing it myself. Building a garage addition, new roof and septic. In between now and the 14th of August I'm going to be home for 5 days and the end of the driving season could be the middle of September. I don't want to screw around with it. I'd like it fixed and fixed correctly. If I wait until my days off and it needs more than just brushes then I will still have to send it off anyway and then I'll get it back just in time to put it away for the winter.

Years ago I had my 77 alternator rebuilt by a local shop that did Bosch along with other brands. I forgot the OEM output (think it was 55A) but had it rebuilt to 85A. Told them it was for an old Ferrari but they said it didn't matter. They also sealed the unit to protect from water . Replaced everything that was needed. The only thing I did was remove the rear shield and the pulley. Got it back in a week and it looked brand new. It still worked good after 10 years when I sold the car. This is no special alternator and can be done by most reputable builders.

You don't want rebuilt. You want reman. Rebuilt means change out defective part. Reman means bring everything up to oem spec or better. Just saying. Good luck. Bruce

Semantics. Even remanufactured can be performed to different levels depending on the vendor. So neither is a guarantee of a quality part.

My recommendation Jim is to use Romaine Electric. Their headquarters is in Kent, WA
Call them, and explain what you need done, and perhaps send them a photo as well, and they can tell you if they can do what you need

Hands down, 100% best in the business. Unquestionable quality, integrity and best access to original equipment components. With all the decisions to take with these cars - when it comes to starter and alternator service ... no decision necessary with AIE.

Yes, Bruce is right. Brush/regulator is one pice held on back of alternator with two screws. There are about a dozen different part numbers but the only different is which way the wire terminals stick out. Do a search for Bosch alternator parts and you will find them on Amazon or ebay. Pull your alternator out and have a look and then match it to parts you find on line.

I've used Sleepy Hollow in Cumming as well for a Boxer and Daytona.

They are good to work with.
