I'll let your comments speak for themselves.

That's why I said displacements from 326 to 455 cubic inches! Plus the 301 isn't a real motor anyway ;)

Ford sold the trademark of GT 40, and when they reissued the car they were barred from calling it that so they were stuck with "Ford GT". I think no one thought to originally trademark GTO, and once it's in general usage it's too late. How Pontiac can trademark it now is not clear to me.

Gibson never trademarked "humbucking" for their double coil pickup, so all maunfacturers can call their pickups humbucking even if it's not double coiled! (But no one does that.)

    They actually asked permission.
And this year, after the 304,305,306,307 we have the Peugeot 308. Still weird to read in the magazines "the new 308!", and see that it's about the Peugeot.

I thought the old Pontiac GTO are called the "Goat"

You guys remember the old GTO with a 6 pack 1969

I believe it's the one Vin Diesel drove from the movie XXX

The 250GTO was labeled 250GT, as it was intended to take advantage of the existing homologation of the 250GT SWB by claiming it was merely a continuation of the same model. The informal addition of 'Omologato' no doubt came into being as a celebratory exclamation when the factory heard the FIA fell for the ruse. The sanctioning body took their revenge, however, by subsequently denying homologation to the 250LM.

Pontiac GTO's are often referred to as "Goats". Dyslexia rules!

In '64, '65, and '66, GTO's were available with a "tripower" 3x2 barrel carb setup (aka "6 pack", which is technically the name Mopar gave to their 3x2 barrel carb setup). Pontiac guys sometimes call their 3x2 setup "trips" (short for tripower).

Vin Diesel's GTO in xXx was a butchered '67.

I don't know if it can still be trademarked, or how GM got anyone to approve the trademark GTO, but I would think the group that originally coined the term, the people that have become the FIA, might have registered the name in Europe. By now, any trademark rights may have expired.

Unlike a patent or copyright, I believe one may perpetually capture trademark rights if no one else has a valid claim. If you search the horribly arcane TESS database, you will find it littered by dead and abandoned GTO trademarks. The only live GTO trademark I could find for automobiles was the 2002 GM registration I noted below.

It may not belong to anyone, but to me it goes 100% right with Ferrari, it has the only significant, iconic and historic 250GTO plus also the first Ferrari supercar, the 288GTO. Also Gran Turismo Omologato is in Italiano and I don't see Ferrari as criminals stealing designs away from crap companies doing the Mera thing. I surely don't give a crap about an American iron boat rolling on tires named GTO.

I was watching "Car Crazy" on speed network and they had one of the former Pontiac Executives reminescing(sp). The guest commented that the name G.T.O. stood for Grand Turismo Optimo. I thought it was cheesy, but what the heck, it was Pontiac.

But will never as much as a 250GTO. A muscle car is like a chevy nova with some collectors overpaying just because they can spend that much money, they were never special in their time and never will, maybe nostalgia plays a big role.

Thanks very much, everybody - I was sort of expecting this one to die the death of "repost", although I did search around and could not find anything before I put it up.

I learned some interesting stuff here; for example I did not know that the GM suits had actually copyrighted it. Wonder if they managed to pull off the same stunt for "Grand Prix" - another Pontiac of the past?

You know - thinking about this made me remember how many honored names from the past the U.S. "Big Three" have squandered away: The Chevrolet Bel Aire, the Thunderbird (after a pitiful attempt to bring it back), the DeSoto, the entire brand names Plymouth and Oldsmobile, the Cadillac Coupe de Ville, just to name a few.

Maybe they know in their hearts that the current tinfouls they are making just don't live up to the title?

It appears Nissan has, ostensibly through Renault, rights to AMC's old badges. Rogue and I think one other that escapes me are currently on Nissan vehicles.

not to put too fine a point on it, but only dodge called them six pak (not 6 pack), like my car below. plymouth called them six barrel sometimes abbreviated BBL.
