I'll take a Citation X-11 instead or Omni GLH.

I was always intrigued by the Cimarron but 4 doors killed it for me. The FWD is how it failed amongst the competitors. For starters anyway Same for the Allante.

The fact that it shared 90% with the base stripper Chevy made the Caddy a non-starter.

Popular Science isn't a reliable source for automotive criticism. Especially at the time; they were overly generous to American cars because they advertised within its pages.

That over decorated Citation killed itself. And the guys at GM were still scratching their heads when they went bust.

Furthermore, the Cimarron is perhaps the worst example of badge engineering ever. It's nothing more than the Chevy Cavalier. And nothing about that car was very cavalier.

Caviler with a Cadillac emblem. Literally, that's all GM changed on the car.

We used to call those Cavillacs when they were new. Pretty sure the shame of driving one killed it.

It was so bad it should have killed Cadillac!!

My parents had 3 BMW's in the 80's, an 88 325ic, an 89 325ix and another 91 325ic. My Mom didn't like the Mercedes 560SL nor the Jaguar XJS-C. No way would they buy a Cadillac, especially a rebadged econo box one. The only American vehicle my parents ever bought was an 84 Jeep grand wagoneer.

Maybe it was the same guy who killed the Lincoln Versailles.

My boss had one and I drove it a few times. I bought a BMW 2002 Tii instead. As I remember he had good luck with it.

The Atlante is a different story just a horrible car, very unreliable.

The good news is GM cars are great now. My C7 Corvette is more fun to drive than the 458 Ferrari. I went back and bought a 2015 Z/28 which is just an awesome car. So far they have been perfect.

    Best

That Opal piece of crap looks like a crown jewel next to the Cimarron.

Or am I being too harsh? Or not harsh enough?

Stupid ad campaign with what looked like a toucan. Cartoon characters helped market Road Runners, didn't work with Caddy.

Strictly in terms of design, inside and out, the German competition at that time seemed to come from a different galaxy than GM, Ford and Chrysler.

Yet when trying to account for the ascendant popularity of European cars in the 1980s, all anybody could talk about was manufacturing quality (or pretentious customers). There was almost a code of silence when it came to design.

Even if the Cimarron was hand assembled in a clean room to aerospace standards, it wouldn't have made it a more desirable car.

    Correct, the customers killed it.
