I checked with Ricambi and Rutlands, and neither sells rebuild kits for my 308QV's brake master cylinder, and both suggested sending it off to White Post Restorations in Virginia, which I promptly did.

Below are photos of the way I got it back from them... lots of contaminants just waiting to be flowed into the brake system. My obvious concern was, if what I can see looks like this, how sloppy were they with the rebuild in the inside where I can't see it? They didn't even put new rubber plugs in, just replaced the old ones. I called White Post, and talked to the owner, Billy. He was quite rude; his initial response was clearly that he didn't want to talk about it: "Just clean it out yourself or send it back". I said I wouldn't consider cleaning what I could see because there may be more inside if his guys were that sloppy in the fittings areas under the rubber grommets. "How could that get through?" I asked. He said, "I don't know, just send it back then if you don't want to clean it" in an irritated voice. Mind you, I had him on speaker phone and my mechanic was standing right beside me making eyes like he couldn't believe this guy. "Will you take it apart again to check the inside? You want me to email you pictures? And I shouldn't have pay the return shipping when you've sent it to me obviously bad right out of the box." Billy broke in and said, and I again quote: "Let me talk now, you've done enough talking! Just send it back. And what, you want me to take the shipping out of my own pocket? Return shipping isn't covered under our warranty but I suppose I could put a few bucks in the box." All with a very irritated tone of voice.

I've told Daniel at Ricambi and sent him photos, suggesting they rethink recommending Whitepost. I'll be doing the same with Steve Ahlgrim at T. Rutlands.

The master came back again today, and it looks beter; when I have time to put it in in the next few days, hopefully it's fine. But I'd be unlikely to use White Post Restorations again if I have another option at the time. Everyone, and every organization, makes mistakes... but it's the attitude of owner Billy towards me when they were obviously at fault that blows me away. I never even got an apology from him! Just the $15.20 for the extra shipping trip credited back to my card... and new rubber plugs, and 'uncrudded' fitting openings this time.

Mike, can you just order the kit from White Post and have your mechanic rebuilt it?

I don't know... I doubt it. Just having my mechanic do the rebuild was our original intent but couldn't find just a 'kit'.

At this point, of course, it doesn't matter... it's done and paid for.

Unfortunately not the first problem story from White Post.

A rebuild is the "kit" apparently White Post didn't have one either. Try GT Car Parts for that (623) 780-2200.

I used to send calipers there to be re-sleeved but not since I found Brake and Equipment Warehouse right here in Minneapolis.

    www.brakeplace.com

They do stainless steel sleeving, excellent work. They stock some kits but probably not for the Ferrari.

Uh.... they use White Post too. I had them rebuild a rear caliper for me. No issues so far.

Can't speak to the rudeness, we only heard one side. But it seems they made a mistake, fixed it and paid the shipping. Sounds like they stood behind their work. Maybe the guy was having a bad day or he didn't like your tone of voice (speculation on my part). Who knows? Bottom line is are you satisfied with the work and the price? I have never had anything done by them.

The dealer I was at previously had a 100% failure rate on component repairs from Whitepost.

I had one repair on such castiron brake part (brake cilinder) with new seals and fine honing with WD40 but I was not happy when I saw the fluid a bit leaking again some good year later. It made my think I'd never repair those again and just go out and buy a new part.

    my 2 cents

If they don't have the "kit" then how they rebuilt the master? Simply sleeve the master then reuse everything else including the old rubbers?

They would order the kit or you would provide it.

I personally only have cylinders re-sleeved, I complete the rebuild myself in my shop. I have, on occasion, purchased the kit from Brake & Equipment. They also can custom make replacement brake hoses that are functionally identical to OEM for a fraction of the price. This is typically done "while you wait" when I visit their shop.

NO, I am not. Something that visually obvious going out the door is NOT good work.

Unfortunately this is the general reputation they have aquired lately. It didn't used to be this way.

Some Lambo guys have had good luck with this place: http://www.resleeve.com/booster.htm

I used this guy earlier this year to help me piece together a rebuild kit for my late 90's Maserati track car and he was very, very good. I did not have any work done by him. He seems to know where to go to get the stuff too.

Absolute shame business owners act this way, hard to believe he treated you with such disrespect. Almost expect it nowadays with employees, but not from the owner. Bad day or not, you DO NOT treat a customer or potential customer in that manner....

I have had bad days and busy days and absolute wingnuts call me and ask for quotes to do parts, but never once have I even thought of being disrespectful or saying something nasty to any one of them.... You never know who they really are and they connections they may have for your future business needs...

I've had Apple hydraulics do a bunch of stuff for me on english and italian.
I just sent them the rubber seals and they re-sleeved the part with either brass or stainless.
worked great all the time on that leaky english stuff.

I haver allways used SS Brakes but not recently. Are they no longer in business and or not doing this work any longer. Have also used Sierra Specialties Automotive (800) 4 Brass-1 with great success. Trust that this may help,

Things have definitely changed at White Post. Years ago they were the pinnacle of restoration and rebuilding, but in recent years their quality has gone down the tubes significantly. It seems as though more people than not, have an issue with their work these days. It is truly a shame, as they had such a great reputation.

Apple is worse than White Post. I have had more than 1 incident with them. If you go on any British car forum, you are bound to find a whole host of unhappy customers. They have been putting out crap for years.

Always treat people with respect. Not only does it make for good business but in the end you never know who you're talking too.

Well, the days of being able to repeatedly treat customers like crap are over. The reach and power of the internet (and forums like this) make it just about impossible now to get away with really poor customer service.

Maybe the WP owner is in such a foul mood because his business is now in the toilet due to poor reputation finally working its way all over the internet....

These stories are not that recent a development except when compared to how long they've been around. I first used them 30 years ago. So if this is representitive of their work then how they stay in business is a mystery.

I have had White Post work on brake and clutch hydraulics numerous times and always had good luck. The work was high quality and was done on time and at the quoted price. That experience was from few years ago and the work was on Jaguar master/slave cylinders.

Billy has done numerous re-sleeves and rebuilds for me over the years. I've always been more than happy with the product although I've never received anything back that looked as yours did.

He should have eaten the 15.00 in shipping. Surprised he didn't. Maybe it's time for someone else to man the phones at White Post. Thats a poor way to lose a customer IMO.
