Do you hear that little "whistle" noise that occurs very briefly every time he shifts at full-throttle? My Speciale makes that same exact sound when I shift at full throttle. I've wondered what is happening, mechanically, to create that little sound... Any ideas? It almost sounds like the release of pressure from the transmission. I really don't think it is pneumatic (i.e. like the F1 cars used about 12-14 years ago) so doubt it's a pneumatic thing... I've asked a few guys about it, and nobody seems to have a clue. Some have said they can't hear it... Which tells me they must not shift often at full throttle... But in this video, you can very clearly hear it!

Yes I get this whistling sound when shifting in the high revs in sport mode but don't seem to hear it in race mode. I took it as an indication by the car that I should switch to race mode when driving aggressively. i.e. shifting in the high revs

These 'whistling' 'ticking' sound posts really amuse me!
It's a race car guys: its high compression motor has moving parts and the air passes through it.
Every time there is a gear shift the rpm's change and the amount of air being
sucked in the motor varies, creating most of these wonderful 'whistling' noises.

Fwiw i have the bmc airbox filter and get a neat turbo-like whistle at around 3 to 5K
rpm's from the 15% added air intake :D

    best

Interesting... Now it's your turn to amuse us.... How about capturing this sound on video and posting it? Would love to hear this....

When I hear it, I always think it's a hydraulic sound somewhere inside the transmission.

Internals, and also the air getting sucked through at a different rate as the rpm's rise or fall
due to the gear change creates the 'whistle' or 'squeak' some refer to.

funny that other 9K rpm engines do not have thus issue... BMW, Porsche, Honda..

i suspect it’s a huge design defect that Ferrari cannot easily resolve

Yes I agree. My car has this. Just got my belt changed and the sound is gone. But it will probably return. There are a few threads dedicated to this topic.

(I also here some brake noise in the video.)

My 458 had the chirp which Ferrari said is normal. Never did figure out the exact cause but it sure was annoying. Hopefully my TBD 488 won’t have the same issue.

If it is documented (as has been posted on FChat in the past) that replacing the belt in question eliminates the whistle (at least for a while) then it positively rules out intake noise. Also, I have done my share of cleaning and oiling air filters on race bike and good riddance to them. Do it wrong in one of many ways and the cylinder gets worn quicker (sooner ball honing required). Good riddance and wouldn't even think of anything but stock paper filters in a new or any Ferrari. Best.

I'm sure I read somewhere this noise is due to one of the front pulleys and belt and is not an issue. The Ferrari techs are aware of it and it is not a cause for concern.

Belt change took the chirp away on my 458 as well.

Agreed it is not a "issue" from a durability standpoint. When I say design issue, I mean it's definitely not something for Ferrari to be proud of. For a manufacturer that prides itself on tuning acoustics and sound of the car, this sound is utterly embarrassing, IMO.

My car is doing the same thing. I don't think it was always there. I started hearing it over the course of a club drive, so it makes sense that a belt change would eliminate it for a while.

I'm a bit relieved to have found this thread and that this seems to be a normal.

Yes my Speciale and 458 spider did the same exact thing. None in the 488 spider
