Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever figured out which models are the most expensive to service? Surely the 512BB and BBi are way up on the list. What about the TR and 360?
    Does anyone know?

Fine I'll beat the dead horse.

Any flat 12 Ferrari made. Any and all. Period.

Then comes the mid engine v8 cars of the 355 and 348.

    360 actually isn't that bad.

430 is not bad on maintenance... Just bad parts. E diff and headers.

So it comes down to routine maintenance or expensive repairs.

Because 599s get ridiculously expensive to keep it seems.

But if you have a car with a DCT failure. That can be easier 10k in used parts or 20 plus if you repair with new parts... Some have been whacked with 40k plus replacements.

Then you have the laferrari which needs a 200k battery.

These later problems make maintenance on a 355 seen downright affordable

I'm totally with you on the flat 12s. My 599 has really not been too bad if I take away the things I wanted to fix opposed to the things that had to be fixed.

years ago I figured the OPERATING costs for my Daytona and published the results here. It amounted to about $4.00 per mile to OPERATE it. since then I have driven it another 30,000 miles. I will repeat the exercise someday when I am bored. I am emphasizing operating cost-not including capital costs. For us non-billionaires it does make you think before setting off on a 3000 mile adventure.

Time to upgrade. My Maranello ran $3 a mile, but that included depreciation.

I had a '72 XKE that ran me 2 dollars per mile in 1980. That was outrageous money back then.

    cars require maintenance.
    all cars.
i have a 2010 panamera that must have cost me $10k in the last 2 years, and cost the extended warranty double that. that is more than the value of the car in the last 2 years.....on a 12 year old german car.....
and i am absolutely positive that these parts failures are engineered to perform, and fail, exactly on this schedule.

at least with my old ferraris the underlying car is still worth more almost every year.

    now for ferrari maintenance......

my 456mgt cost about 30-35k in out of pocket repairs (not routine maint, or anything else like insurance gas etc), and it lost $50K when i sold it.
so $80-85 k over 35k km, or roughly 22k miles so about $4/mile.

    that is my worst one.
all the others come out ahead because they have gained in value.

wait till those batteries and other techno wizardy start going bad off-warranty on the sf90 and the 296. the Laf will be able to get away with $250k battery swaps because the value will hold up - maybe. (you can alrady see that it is the lowest priced of the 5 ferrari halo cars).
but the sf90 and especially the 296 - which they plan to make about 20k examples of.....will drop very very fast when you tell the 3rd owner that he needs to cough up $100k to fix his bricked car, that is only valued at 300k if he is lucky, and probably more like 200k by that time.

to be fair, part of this equation is the denominator....mileage.
the cars age, and the parts age, and the 'togetherness' of the car ages, but that is all independent of mileage.

if you drove your daytona as much as you do your daily, your maintenance cost may increase, but the mileage will increase a lot more.

for example, my f40 has cost me probably $75k all in for repairs and maintenance for the last 12 years of ownership, and i have put roughly 10k km, or 6k miles on it in that time. so even though i drive my f40 more than most people, i still end up with a $10+/mile figure. (luckily it also gained $2 mil in value in that time ;) )

but if i take my 512tr, i have had maybe $25k in maintenance so far, and facing another $25k now, and i have owned that car for 23 years and 50k km or 30k miles.
so this time the math yields less than $2/mile. pretty good i would say, but entirely due to the mileage i put on it.

i will also say that in my experience all cars, and most ferraris, are far easier on maintenance if you drive them regularly, carefully but forcefully, and take care of all regular maintenance of consumables. the more you drive, the less issues you have, and at least when you do have issues, the denominator is bigger and you can smile about it. :)

i am back for a third time - can you tell that this subject hit a nerve?????

i forgot to add that we can gripe about ferraris and even german cars.....

but there is nothing as wallet sucking as an older english car.
some of them are beautiful and fun, but they were often built with the express purpose of falling apart as soon as they were sold.
the lack of build quality is only surpassed by the russians.

No $ per mile numbers..... however
My 1999 Modena gated coupe has been totally reliable. Other than maintenance, and a repair to the steering rack, zero spent on it during my 6 year ownership.
My 1991 348 TS was a money pit. Worst Ferrari I have ever had.
I have heard from friends about flat 12 costs, and yes these cars are pretty costly to keep. I am referring to the BB series. Don't know about Testarossas.
My 1971 365 GTC/4 is like any vintage hand-built car. Costly to repair, quite reliable and predictable once set up properly. Vintage cars are, IMHO, in a different category.

If I were to make an educated guess, my 328 has run somewhere between 1.25 and 1.50 per mile . After reading this thread, Im pretty sure that my 328 will be the only Ferrari that I will ever own in my lifetime.

Speaking of Russian cars here's an old joke, but a good one:

Why do Ladas have rear window defrosters? To keep your hands warm while you push it!

The most expensive Ferrari is one that was not driven during the warranty period. Fixing all the little stupid stuff after the warranty is over gets expensive.

i am sure he does. Malcolm and i go back a ways, and spent some time touring Sicily together. much respect.

this is ABSOLUTELY the wisest line that EVERYONE on this site needs to read, understand, and completely embrace. the dumbest thing you can do is buy new and not not use the car while all the crap is covered.

Ross: Your point about the cost per mile varying a lot based on the denominator[ie, when you do the arithmetic] is of course accurate. I drove the Daytona another thirty thousand miles before the next "freshen". doing the arithmetic before the service would yield a lower cost per mile. after the service not so much.
Ditto about not driving new cars. I bought a year old 2017 F12 with 2400 miles on it. It now has 40,000.
