Trying to decide on a lens and am having trouble between these two..... The 24-105 is a little lighter, smaller and has IS which is nice but will also suck battery power and I see the f2.8 of the 24-70 as a good alternative. I am really looking for an all purpose lens to take everywhere and go with my 70-200 f4L. I have played around with the 24-105 at a camera shop and it seems like an awesome lens..... anybody have thoughts on the subject?

I have the 24-105. I almost always use it (primary exception: for automotive photos I tend towards my 17-40).

I like to have some focal length overlap (17-40, 24-105, 70-300 in my case).

I can highly recommend the 24-105, but have no experience with the 24-70. It would be nice to have its speed now and again.

I would get the 24-105. Unless you are in very low light, the f/4 will be plenty fast and IS will really come in handy.

I recently picked up a Sigma 28-105 F2.8 and love it... I nominate it. It`s quite crisp, and the AF is quite quick... This is for my Canon body.

When I was in the same position as you, I went for 24-105 and I'm very happy with it. It really depends on your needs but I'd definitely recommend it, unless you need f2.8. :)

I've had the 24-105 for about a year now. I love it. The IS has saved me so many times. It's a great all-around lens. As others have said, if you require lower-light performance, consider the 2.8 - I do a lot of low-light photo and I sometimes feel I should have got the 2.8 - I will probably get one down the line at some point.

Wow........I didn't know we had such a group of 24-105 L IS guys.

When I carry just one lens I always go with it. It is very fast and easy to shoot. It doesn't take much battery power. I've shot 200 picts and never even thought about battery power. The IS is great and should get you down two stops anyway for the low light situations.

    I have the 100-400 L IS too........ that's a beast

Yes it is. I considered that, but opted for the more compact 70-300 DO IS. Not L glass, but pretty decent sharpness even at full focal length.

It's about the same size as the 24-105.

I have decided on the 24-70 but still haven't bought it yet, it takes a bit of time to get stuff in the mail here and I have a lens that works for now so I just haven't been motivated enough to actually order it up. I have looked at a few shops here in town but nobody seems to carry the Canon L stuff otherwise I would buy it locally as the prices are roughly the same. Since quite a bit of my photography is from the air the 70-200 gets used most of the time anyway.

Just ordered and ended up getting the 24-105... the f2.8 would have been nice but the greater focal length and slightly smaller size and weight ended up tipping it for me. Ordered it from J&R in NYC and they have always been quick about getting orders out here so I'm hoping to have it soon and start playing around with it.

A couple pics with the new lens.... this is one of the Palm Islands and Burj hotel in Dubai. With my previous lenses I couldn't take night shots nearly as well between the movement & vibration of the plane and my unsteady hand. It was a relatively clear night which helped a lot, the dust can really obscure things on the ground. Altitude was 26,000 and speed was around 320 knots, had the pilot dip the wing a bit to get the overhead shot to come out better.

The first pic (and third) was 1/5 second, 105mm, f4, ISO 1600

The second pic was 1/8 second, 35mm, f4, ISO 1600
