Since the pics of the W221 are out and I've always been a fan of the big sedans (but not the recent ones), which is your favorite?

The easy choice is the W140. It was built like a tank and had refined lines for the times. The W220 is sweet, great style and agility, but terrible build problems......a real shame.

I'm betting on the W221. While the picts haven't sent me running to the dealer, I think it will be a winner in design, performance and build quality.

    Let's see

I'm tossed between the W140 (arguably one of the best Benzs quality wise. ) and the W220 (arguably one of the best LOOKING autos made in the class. S65 motor rocks too.)

I am glad you picked only the engines that MATTER.

As a young child in the 1980s, I was madly in love with the then new 560 SEL. I thought they were the bees knees! I love the look of the W220; it is one of the best looking modern sedans, but I have also heard that quality is not quite up to the standards of its predecessors.

    :)

I just realized something, minus the W220 which is too new, you could buy one of each of the others for about what I spent on my three Ferraris.

Hmm, I wonder how much space is left in that warehouse...

I would go as well for the 560 SEL, it just had an incredible presence and was a great looking car.
Also, the 450 SEL 6.9 was a wonderful car for its time, very fast, with LSD and so on, things you only found on sports cars, and a pneumatic suspension, ABS etc etc etc.

The 220 is not a bad barge either, looks great.
The new one has a somehow challenging look, what a shame they copied over the dumb i-sh..t from BM.

W126 560SEL and W140 S600. Last of the Panzerwagens. Both has enormous presence and slight sinister look to it. That I like.

The W140 set the standard very high for the S Class. "Huge" interior, double paned windows, solid ride and even great handling. Some of the great attributes were lost with the newer models, including quality.

    Easy question: W140 S600.
Best built quality MBZ is still the W140 series.

560 SEL had the best styling ever for the S Class.
At the time it was just a perfect large sedan with superb presence and respect.

I am surprised so few people choose the 6.3 ?

That was a drivers car. Check out the #'s that car produced in the very early 70's.

Also the car was built like a tank.

W140 was my choice... the car that the W220 is trying to live up to.

Personally, I'll take a 500E on the W124 over anything on the list. Black please.

Here it is boys, the king of the hill. The W220 feels like a plastic Lexus compare to the w140's tank like built. In time to come, I'm sure this will be a much sought after classic mercedes to enjoy and drive. As solid as the w126 but much more modern to drive.

It breaks my heart to see so many W126s (and recently, W140s) that look like they've just returned from a war zone; bits hanging off, poor crash repairs (or, in most cases, unrepaired), filthy, haggard. What a fall from grace. I would love to have either a W126 or W140 in mint condition (with heritage plates!!) as a daily driver. They truly are beautiful sedans.

And yes, the 300SEL 6.3 is a veritable hot-rod. An absolute classic; of that there can be NO doubt!

Can anyone say 'Gangster mobile'!!! What a tough, sophisticated looking car, congratulations!

BTW, IMO, had Princess Diana or Dodi Al-Fayed been wearing their seat belts, I don't think they would have died in the accident involving the W220. (edit: meant W140) The bodyguard in the front seat survived (he was the ONLY one wearing his seat belt) and, correct me if I'm wrong, his side of the car suffered the most damage.

It was a W140 and hit on the driver's side. Never knew which year/engine it was, but my lawyer always called my car the "Lady Di Death Trap". Ba$tard...
