Hi all, I'm looking for a Mclaren F1 scale model so from those who own them is the 1/18 scale ones or 1/12 I'm looking for authenticity in shape, lots of detail, could anyone post pictures of theirs? Price isn't the issue as in I'm prepared to pay the market rates for either scale.

    Thanks

Only minichamps do the 1:12 at a decent price. Another company is APM they are sealed resin & about $1500. 1:18 the old UT ones are good, but some have weak doors etc now. Autoart are going to do the 1:18 in silver & minichamps are bringing out some to. So alot of the old UTs are on e bay as they might go down in value soon. You can get the new 1:12 silver road car by minichamps for a decent price now. Also orange is coming in the spring & i think black.

There are several errors on the 1/12 Minichamps but it is pretty good and the re-release is much more reasonable than what people try to get for the original series. They've announced an orange one for this year.
Likewise the 1/18 Minichamps have errors and the "collector" prices on Ebay are ridiculous unless you enjoy paying up to $325 for something that originally cost around $50.00. If you want 1/18 I'd probably wait and see what AutoArt come out with.
The APM model mentioned above is actually Model Car Workshop I think - check out Morry's site for pictures.

Edit: weak doors are not the only problem with old Minichamps models. Many of them have sticky wheels by now. The paint on the wheels sort of melts, goes sticky and will be marked if anything touches it.

Edit II: For more than you ever cared to know about McLaren F1 models head over to automotiveforums.com and poke around in the McLaren F1 forum.

thanks again guys for sharing it looks like I'll be looking/bidding for a 1/12 Minichamps version as it has all opening compartments etc and seems to be fairly faithfull in its reproduction. I have good modelling skills so if I find any inaccuracies in it I'll have a go at fixing them. Is it true that Minichamps are re releasing a metallic blue one this year? does anyone have any pictures?

On another note what ever happened to the famous Flemke - is this your Mclaren posts on Piston Heads forum? I can only find vol 4

The metallic blue one was announced last year and is on the list for release 1st quarter of 2010. The orange one is on the list for 2nd quarter. Minichamps also have a 1:18 black metallic, a 1:43 silver "1993 GTR" road car, a 1:18 "Ueno Clinic" LeMans winner and a 1:18 GTR "Lark" all for 1st quarter. These dates are usually meaningless.

Wow the 1/18 AA one looks veeeeerrrryyyy detailed even more so than the 1/12 Minichamps. I can't remember where but I saw some good shots of the AA 1/18 version and it looks like they spent more time detailing and colouring the engine correctly i.e the exhausts on the 1/12 one look toyish whilst the 1/18 AA they seem more metallic like the real thing. Looks like I'm going to spend some time "detailing" the 1/12 one with carpets, correct paint finishing in the engine bay and maybe even some wiring. When I finally get it and detail it I'll post some pics up.

There is alot of the silver ones out there but its not my favourite colour I'd say the fav's are red/grey/yellow followed by black/dark blue and silver last. Theres a couple opf grey ones on ebay out of GB and USA but they want wayyyyy tooooo much, even for a motivated buyer like me. I could be tempted into a silver at the right money but then that of course would prompt a repaint perhaps into the famous Flemke Mclaren f1 colour combination of french blue with dark wheels mmmmmm. When I get one I'll evaluate the possibilty of buying another and turning a standard one into a Papaya Orange LM, now that would be rare......

BTW thanks for the responses and photos guys, isn't it amazing that after all these years the car still generates massive interest. I know of a few "brands" that evoke that sought of following but can't name a car itself that amazes and still illicates an aura.

No offense but I sense too much talking and no action.
Did you get the 1:12 or not?

I think the best choice would be the AA 1:18. And if you follow their history, I would not be surprised if a 1:12 follows from them too.

The AutoArt does look fairly good for a 1/18th scale, but I can not figure out why they chose to bisect the side window glass with a vertical line, as that is not accurate at all?

I wondered the very same thing is there maybe one out there that looks like that, and it happens to be the one they modelled?? , i know this is sometimes what happens with model companies, also i'm a little disappointed the exhaust bay is not Gold coloured, just a small detail but makes it that much nicer on detail.
My last complaint about the Autoart is something (and i cant quite put my finger on it?) is not quite right about the nose / shape/ length / lights??? Not sure what it is but it just doesnt seem quite right.

Good eye Al. There should also be two strips of gold running the length of the upper engine cover in the middle.

As for the windows, if there is an F1 that looks like that I've certainly never seen it, and I've seen most of them. :)

The only thing that comes close is this anomaly seen on XP1 during the Silverstone test, but as you can see it is not a vertical, and if you look to the left side glass is not matched on the other side. If they were creating this model recently, certainly XP1 was not available for them to work from. ;)

If that driver's seat insert is Orange and not Red, it would appear this may be modeled after the original look of chassis #006 seen in the last two shots.
