There are so many different digital cameras around I'm getting confused as to which I should get. What I want is a really small and reliable camera with around 5 megapixels. High video quality is important as well. Right now I'm leaning towards the Casio EX-S500. It has all the stuff I'm looking for and it's only around $350, but I just don't know if it's a quality camera that won't give me issues. Anyone have any input or better suggestions?

I like the canon's myself. Check out the SD series. I have a SD300 and love it. It fits right in my pocket. I think the new SD450 is 5 megapixels but I'm not sure. I know the SD500 is.

I love my Sony P200. Love it so much I just bought one for my in laws. It goes to 7.2 MP but I rarely go over 5. Takes great vids. Stock battery lasts a long long time without recharge. I upgraded the mem stick too; 512 for an extra $40 (im an ebay whore).

Best Buy has the best price, i think it was $329. I know Sony had a $30 mail in rebate on the camera last week when I bought it, so that puts you under $300. When i bought mine over the summer I paid $349 i think it was. I love the camera. Easy to use, CRYSTAL CLEAR pictures, tiny and light.

    Agreed, DON'T buy a Casio. Get a Canon SD400 (5.0), 450 (5.0) or 500 (7.1). Small, and they take great shots. I have a SD450. The 450 and 500 have large 2.5" screens. The 400 is the same as the 450, but with a 2.0" screen.

Hey guys I checked out all the cameras mentioned, and ended up with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9, 6 MP, great specs. The Exilim seems to be over-rated and doesn't do good quality pictures. The Panasonic has a good lens (Leica) and great quality!

Just got a Nikon Coolpix 8400. Get it from Ritz. Until Jan 2006. Buy that camera and get $150.00 rebate towards a Epson printer. Got a $600 camera and a $180 printer for a little over $600. Both online and free shipping to the house. Awesome camera and printer. 8 x 10 prints look like 3d. Great quality.

Get a Canon SD400 you'll love it! I have the SD200 it's only 3.2 MP but does a great job.

If you don't like Canon or somthing look at the Sony W7 it's excellent as well.

The Cannon SD500 is awesome, just got one for Christmas. It's small, lightweight, many photo modes for a small camera. 7.1 Megapixels and I think you can get 30FPS video as well.

The only difference between the SD400/SD450 and SD500/SD550 is that the X50 versions have 2.5" screens. They are pretty much the same camera expect the LCD screens.
Lots of clearance on the SD500 because the SD550 is the *new* model. I think amazon has it for under $350.

Check www.dpreview.com for reviews on digital cameras.

I have an Olympus, 5 MP, nothing special but very reliable and easy to use. My only gripe is that it goes through batteries very quickly.

Casio Exilim EX-Z750. 7.2MP, great screen, and with the 1GB card the battery lasts 3 card-fulls worth. Nice slim package.

I have a Nikon D70 SLR (use a Nikon D1 & D70 at work) as well as a Canon PowerShot 75 point & shoot - one of many Canons I've used. I like the feel & logical menus of the little Canon. A large viewing LCD display is good too. Never have needed the video mode tho. For a pro level SLR, the new Nikon D200 available in 2006 is the one. But watch for D70s on sale for an awsome pro quality digital SLR. You can't go wrong w/ a D70. Just my 2 cents as a pro photographer.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Now I've narrowed it down to either the Casio EX-Z750, Sony DSC W7, Sony DSC P-200, and the Canon SD550. The next step is actually physically looking at the cameras and playing around with them because I haven't seen any one them, I've just been browsing online.

Bought myself an SD450 just before the holiday and I gotta agree. Small size, great features, and one of the neat features is the larger-than-most 2.5" screen.

I bought one of these as well, and really like it a lot. My only complaint, and this may apply to all digital cameras, is the amount of time it takes from pressing the button to when the actual photo gets taken. I find it difficult to take a photo of something moving, usually the object is out of the picture when it finally snaps. Do you notice this too? Is there a setting that I am unaware of to make this quicker?

Otherwise, the pics are crystal clear, and with 7.2 megapixels, you can take pics with enough quality to make them into clear posters.

Sony makes some models that go up to 7mp and they're cheap to! Small as well. Canon's are nice as well.

the reason i did not get a sony is; they are expensive, their so called "carl ziess" lens is not made in germany - it is made in taiwan or china - and memory sticks are costly and only work in sony gear. This year i bought a Nikon coolpix 5200, which was 5.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom and took SD memory cards which are almost univserally used in portable devices, not to mention cheaper.

I replaced it just last week with a Nikon coolpix L1, which has 6.2 megapixels, 5x optical zoom. Digital cameras these days are pretty cheap and you can get quite alot of megapixels for your money. Shop around, work out what you require in terms of a camera, work out what medium you want it saved on etc, and go from there

Right now I'm leaning more towards the Canon SD550. I went ahead and looked at today and I was pleased to find out it was so small and portable. It thought it would be bigger and bulkier. I also zoomed in and took some pics of random things in the store and the pictures were very clear. I also looked at the Casio EX-Z750 and I was surprised at how big the LCD screen was. It was huge compared to the LCD screen on the SD550.

I was also told today that video quality on most of these digital cameras is the same and there isn't much variance between them. Any truth to that?
