I used Sint2000 for a number of years in the Maserati and bought it from local service guy, Lenny Celiberti, in Windsor, CA.
    http://www.auto-italia.com/
He no longer carries it and it isn't easy for me to get anymore, so I ventured into full synthetics and chose Mobil 1 for about the same price.

My understanding is that Agip Sint2000 used to be (and probably still is) a parasynthetic oil; meaning a blend of synthetic and dinosaur oil. This allowed the owner to mix it with other oils in a pinch. I never mixed it with other oil and this thought strikes me as dangerous because the additive packages may not be identical, but understand that it may be necessary in extreme situations.

Is AGIP that much better? I would think everyone would go with Shell Oils since they sponsor the race team.

You can order directly from www.americanagip.com. Price is right and they'll have it to you in a couple of days. I buy it a couple of cases at a time so that I'm ready for the next change (along with filters 2 at a time..)...

I was a religious AGIP disciple up until a few years ago, when over the course of a few years, the local retailer's price went from 6$ to about 13$ a pint. IMO, he was milking it, knowing fully that most of the AGIP clientele in Montreal was made up of Italian sportcars owners that were more than happy to purchase oil that had been forever associated with Italian motorsports. Even the Ferrari dealer (in the late 90's) switched to using Castrol GTX in his cars after realizing how AGIP was grossly over priced.

Needless to say, after reading the many oil-related threads on this site, I've switched to Mobil 1. And as of this winter, I"ll probably use regular Castrol GTX 20w50, since I change my oil every season, and I drive an average of 1500 miles per season.

i just used royal purple in my 328. the guy at the speed shop talked me into it. my mechanic was skeptical because it was an off brand and he thought it might be too"slick" causing oil leaks. I haven't found a drop on my garage floor and i regularly take my engine up to the red line. been very happy with it.

The more appropriate question is WHY buy Agip oils? Its not even a top line oil. You are much better off with Castro, Mobile1, Royal Purple or a host of other top synthetic oils. Ferrari only recommended Agip back when they were one of their F1 sponsers....that's why Shell is now the recommended oil. I like Castrol TWS synthetic out of all the oilds I have used...http://www.motorsportsupplies.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=79

Actually, Agip is a top line oil. The Sint 200 product line is imported from Italy, and they have a line of high quality gear and hydraulic lubricants as well. A majority of Agip oils that exist in the US are bulk products formulated and blended here, and are sold to many repair shops and dealers. Agip will have a redesigned web site soon with a new on line store, and an updated product line including top quality imported fully synthetic lubricants. As far as pricing, the best bet is to buy direct, as the list prices at dealers and stores are very high.

As far as the Shell oils, the good Shell oils are not available in the US, only the Rotella line and genaral dino oils. As far as the racing and sponsorship, like eveything else, it is all about business. Shell threw an incredible sum of money at Ferrari years back to be associated with them, and their hopefully upcoming F1 success (we all know now how that turned out) and they got it.

you guys are being seriously misled if you think you need or have to buy agip oil. and you are also being misled to think that it is in any way better than mobil 1. synthetic lubes are all more/less made in the same way. stop paying up for this stuff like it was gucci.

Yeah, what he said. Mobil 1, Red Line, Royal Purple, Shell, Castrol, all make good oils. I use Mobil 1 in my Corvette Z06 crankcase, Castrol GTX in the Jag and the Ferrari, and Red Line gear oils in all of the differentials and trannies. Pick your poison, so to speak. There is no reason to go for Agip when there are a bunch of other perfectly good oils out there that you can buy in any auto parts store or on line at deep discounts.

Synthetic and non synthetic oils are required by law to be fully compatible. They can be mixed and I have seen it done many times.

Agip is not junk, but unless you buy it direct you are definitely getting ripped off. Straight from the refinery, it's pretty cheap and they can ship it out pretty fast. Having said that, however, the brand of oil you use probably makes very little difference whatsoever, especially if you change it with some regularity and aren't buying 1.00/quart recycled oil at the wal-mart.

Reminds me of the scene in the late '60s surfing movie "Endless Summer".
The price under the AGIP sign in Africa or somewhere read something like $4.50 a gallon for gas.
    A GIP indeed.

    From what I can remember;
Amsoil and Royal purple are the last of the "true" synthetics.
Mobile 1 (and imitators ) used to be but now is "synthetic" because it is altered from normal stock, thus falls under the synthetic name.
IMO Amsoil was first, best, and will probably be last.

Even though base oils comprise around 85 percent of the volume of the finished motor oil product base oils provide probably only 50 percent of the function of motor oils. The definition of synthetic is loose now and the chasm between synthetic and mineral oils has narrowed.

My belief is that semi synthetic oils are actually the best for street driving. Only time will tell but quote me now.

There are many fully synthesized oils as Red line, a group V oil and others. I just today put Red Line 5W-20 in my wife's Murcielago. I used the same in my Maybach. Both normally recommend 40 wt. oils.

My Enzo that calls for Shell Helix Ultra 10W-60 currently runs Castrol European Formula, German made 0W30.

Amsoil is a good oil but I do not use it. Mobil 1 is still a great oil and readily available and reasonably priced. It may be the best bang for the buck these days.
