I do understand the dilemma. I bought my 3 pedal coupe new 16 years ago and the question of what's next has pestered me ever since. I guess the answer is that I still have the 430. I also have a 2012 Cayman R which is pretty raw. I tried a newer model Cayman but the electric steering and overall bulkier feel turned me off. So I may have to suffer with this pair until I'm dead. LOL.

From what you write I assume money is not your problem.
I cannot see anything beyond Ferrari, but I love Lamborghini and Dallara too - ok, I am Italian, I am biased!
Where I in your place, I would certainly go for a Dallara Stradale, one of the few if not the only convertible supercar with manual gearshift that is currently produced right for people like you.

If you’re happy with these, maybe they’re keepers. I wish I’d kept my 328. I’ve been shopping new cars and frankly none of them capture the same magic. I think the 328 and F430 were real improvements over their predecessors, but after these it seems like more tech rather than more enjoyment.

At this point I’m more interested in drivable classics. Not vintage, but cars that work well in modern traffic and can be maintained long term.

Can't imagine too many cars fit the category well. The F1/Egear/Tiptronic era were just not good transmissions, but if you go much further back, then you lose cars that function well in traffic. I guess the best fit in fun to drive is something like a Cali or PDK 911.

I had no idea 458 spider MT existed. Is that a retrofit?

Yup. Although the Tiptronic is actually not a bad automatic. I had a ‘96 911 Tiptronic back in 2004 and it was fine for what it was.

I think a 512TR is in the modern/classic/drivable category. These don’t feel too vintage, and have decent safety and comfort. I could see it being a nice complement to, or follow up to, an F430 gated car.

But you’re right - not a huge category. I think Porsche offers more options, because they didn’t plunge into F1 gearboxes and instead developed PDK, which is actually quite good…

Oh, I was taking your situation into account on my post.....if MTs are considered, the ultimate winner should be an '05-'06 Ford GT, it just has everything....

Thanks for the input. I had a think about the options proposed:

Diablo / Murci: my poster car as a kid but I sat in a roadster recently and my eye line was legitimately poking out above the top of the windscreen!

Ford GT: wanted one since I saw Jeremy Clarkson’s review on top gear, and still wanted one despite his problems with it. However, it has 3” less headroom than my F430 and given that I only just fit on the F430 the GT would be a no go.

911 variants: had a 6-speed 997.1 Carrera S cab for a few years. Did everything I asked of it. Drove it to the shops, did several track days and road trips. Never let me down. Despite this, it just never felt fun or special. When I drove it I felt like I was just driving a normal small car. I never get that feeling when driving the 430 – I always know I’m in something really cool and different. Can't put my finger on why that is exactly.

599 SA converted to manual: would be epic! But couldn’t bring myself to purchase such an expensive car then modify it.

Dallara Stradale: As amazing as that would be on track, I just can’t imagine myself driving something that extreme and attention grabbing on the street.

V12 vantage / DBS / R8 / 550 Barchetta: solid options, will take for a test drive when one pops up for sale (probably only a few of each in manual convertible delivered to Australia so I might be waiting a while)

It’s weird to think that the car I’m driving currently might be the best car I’ll ever drive (for me). Half the enjoyment I get from cars is dreaming about what could be next. Strange.

It’s because we humans are never ever fully happy with what we have.
You don’t just own one Ferrari, but you have and you had many, belonging to the luckiest 0,000001%. Still, it’s not enough.
    Human nature is uncomprehensible.
Personally, I am sort of glad for not being too wealthy and believing that my first Ferrari should also be the last one. :)
Btw, since we are here, why don’t you consider a Dino 246? Or a convertible TR?

If you prefer mid-engine then I think Ford GT is the only car that might be more fun. Otherwise I think all the choices mentioned would have you trading down.

If you want to try front engine V12, you have a few cool options.

I took my gated 430 Spider for a good drive last weekend, immediately after doing the same in my gated 575, and in the 812 GTS I am reviewing.

For that sharp, instant fun, zippy mid engined magic, in a manual, I don’t think there is a better car ever made than our 430s. As you say, it’s strange to think that. If they had made a manual 458, Huracan RWD, 720S..but they didn’t.

as others have said, the V12 front engines are a different type of fun. A 550 Barchetta will be wonderful, but for go-kart handling, your 430 is different league.

so maybe you won’t find better, but you’ll find different..like switching from a great white Burgundy to a great Napa Cabernet.

You mean how to buy a Dallara?
Ehm, I don’t know. Here in Italy you can ring them up. I know they have an engineering branch in the USA, maybe you can try with it:

Never heard of that one. Love the idea, and that it's real, but while reading the description, I got to "four cylinder EcoBoost turbocha-" <close window>

    So close.

I have a gated f430 and gated 575, can’t imagine an exotic manual experience better than these without getting into crazy money (f40, f50, cgt). Fgt also getting pricy, but at time of release most carmags picked 430 over it, so if fgt is better in real life, maybe not by a significant margin.

Since these are the pinnacle for me, would never replace them, just add for different experience, maybe lotus Elise or 992 gt3 for the most modern NA 6sp. I know not exotic enough for OP, Porsche 981 6sp is pretty awesome, I’ve had one as daily for 5 years, still impressed by it.

Most comparisons didn't see it this way and the FGT was EVO Magazines COTY....the only American car to ever win, so it had to be really good to break that European bias.

Seems like a split jury then. Just a quick google:
    https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a29025/ferrari-f430-vs-ford-gt/

    and
    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparison-test/amp15385739/aston-martin-db9-vs-ferrari-f430-ford-gt-lamborghini-gallardo-m-b-sl65-amg-porsche-911-turbo-s-cabriolet-comparison-tests/

Regardless, both are awesome cars, looks like the Fgt is the one more rapidly getting out of reach price wise.

I enjoyed those articles, thank you. As a fellow owner of a gated 430 and gated 575 I echo your views. If there were a better gated alternative I would definitely have sold one of them and bought it, as I have no particular loyalty to the cars other than their being the best of their kind.

I spent a week recently reviewing an 812 GTS. Amazing car. On the last day I took my gated 430 Spider along the same route, and I am not sure I would swap them, in fact fairly sure I wouldn't, price notwithstanding. I agree with the Car and Driver verdict, though they were driving a F1.

At the time, I tested a 458 first, the gated 430 the next week, and it was an easy decision for me to go 430, felt more raw, more fun, and still plenty fast. I have never driven a manual car with such a light flywheel (can’t imagine what cgt is like) and such quick revs and drops! I normally double clutch downshift in porsches, but have to do regular heel/toe in the 430 since revs drop so fast.

Can’t think of much that competes with or bests the experience. Bet ttforcefeds gated scud does. Fgt. Gt40 even better. My uncle has a superformance gt40 close to being completed, can’t wait to try it, 2500lb!

I had a specialist round to value my 430 manual for insurance and he tried to get me to sell. He said he had 2 buyers that would buy it immediately. (none for sale in NZ or OZ) I said I wouldn't know what to replace it with. He said a 458. They go for $80k plus more than my 430 would fetch. I told him I would not even consider a straight swap. I might take a GT3 manual for a spin. But I already know the answer.
To the OP you'll get a great price in OZ if you were to sell.
