Okay it's driving me crazy ... I have 2 little children (3 - boy and 4 - girl) and 2 older children (12 and 15, both boys), they demonstrate no common sense whatsoever and by the end of the weekend, er, I'm going nuts inside constantly saying to myself:

Quite honestly, I believe my 4 year old daughter has more common sense than all the boys put together. Atleast if you tell her something, most of the time she will think, er, one and a half times about doing the same stupid thing again ... not the boys.

Do they grow out of it?

The 15 year old is showing minor signs (praise the Lord ;)) of starting to think before actions ... but not all the time, more likely it is: Hmmm, I'll just jump up and swing from that ... followed by: "Pete, it just broke ... don't understand why? ... der, er, mutter, mutter ... iPod ear pieces go back in ...".

The 12 year old went for an exercise, wake up walk with his Mum this morning ... great because I strongly believe in the concept of cars for transport ;) ... and also great so they can talk, etc. It was raining, and what do I find before I leave for walk, his wet jacket thrown on to the bloody pool table!. He already knows that water, etc. and pool table don't mix ...

My 3 year old son, only sees Thomas the Tank engine when he looks outside his metaphoric window ... although he does go 'wee' when our car does over a rise and down the other side, with a big smile on his face. He also asks 'What's that Dad? (refering to the noise of the engine when I give the car a bit of a squirt) ... followed by brmmm, brmmmmm' ... :), but he is still showing the usual male signs of being completely stupid ;) ... but then he is only 3!

Okay I just needed to vent, when you see them all together with their peers they are all the same ... guess they are doing just fine :)

    Pete
    ps: that feels better, thanks.

I don't think kids stop being stupid until they are at least in their late teens, 19 years old upwards. So, sorry to say you have a few more years yet. Well, that's what my mum tells me about my 14 year old daughter anyway. So,much like you I'm starting to pull my hair out at the roots. LOL.

The age at which they stop becoming stupid? From what I've heard, it's about 30.

    (I've got a 4 y.o. and a 1 y.o., so I've got lots of time left).

They're just enjoying the pursuit of enjoyment regardless of consequence because they've got a great dad to take care of the consequences/necessities:).

Hmmm, would love to think that, but sometimes I know my frustration is there for all to see ...

Anyway as we all know or soon learn, nothing is harder than raising children, especially as you want them to be able to think, show initiative and thus not be little robots (hmmmm, now that sounds like a feasible option ;) :D).

I'm highly abnormal, but I stopped being stupid around 14.

I've had several high school teachers tell me that they can see a noticeable difference between sophomore and juniors. There's a jump in maturity once you get your drivers license. After that, it seems to be progressively increasing maturity until about 30ish.

    Did Carbon hijack Pete's account?

Basic theme of this thread: Girls are smart, boys are stupid. Girls are good people, boys are not. Blah blah blah...It will end with Boys only want sex and are immature, and girls are precious creatures.

    Blah blah blah... :D

I'm 19 years old, and i'm still stupid. But it's just part of life. Enjoy it now, soon they'll be leaving for college, getting married and having children of their own they think are crazy.

22 year old stepson - college grad - using my vacuum cleaner. Decides it would work better if he cleaned the HEPA filter in the sink - ruins it. I buy a new filter - $55 - he decides the vacuum would work better if he threw the new filter into the trash and ran without one. Next time I vacuum, it's blowing dirt all over the room - where is the filter??!! "Uh, I thought it was no good." So I have to go buy ANOTHER $55 filter! They don't teach sense in college.

Hahaha ... er, no. My daughter has her stupid moments too and can be clumsy ... but compared to the teenagers (sometimes) way ahead ;) :D

But to be serious you cannot compare until she is the same age ... and because she is very much a girl, she is not into, er: "lets punch that, each other, somebody else and see if it hurts mentallity ... "

    Pete,

My kids are 14 and 16, and, regarding your question, I'll cite a quote by Mark Twain, which my kids are really, really, REALLY tired of hearing, and goes something like this:

"When I was 14 years old, my father was so ignorant I could barely stand to have the old man around. When I'd turned 21, I was amazed at how much he'd learned in 7 years."

I guess that 21 age has moved back as society has progressed, because I'm 22 and I don't look at my father with amazement (at least not amazed by his intelligent -- perhaps amazed by his ability to forget things)

Pity ... he has probably forgotten more than you have even thought of yet ;)

I remember when I was in my late teens realising that my father had an heck of a lot to offer, and we made a great team building/modifying his and my race cars ...

I think the key is to stop looking at your father as your parent, but a fellow human being ... the parent term has too much baggage ;) ...

I'm 46 and I'm TOTALLY powerless not to hit 100 mph every time I take my sportbike out. I think stupidity is innate in some of us.

I am no fan of equal opportunity for women, but wouldn't it be more prudent to know what you are talking about, before you start dissing on girls? ;)

Age 55 here and hit 100+ on the expressway in my 330 the other day...when I was 16 I got a ticket for doing 70+ in a 25 zone. I think U R right about innate stupidity.

So, kids are making you crazy?

I have four. Three boys and a girl. Girl is oldest, 19, and tested every limit we set.

Oldest boy keeps his head down and stay out of trouble, same with middle one. Youngest one, 16 in a week, is a barrel of laughs. He can find trouble at Sunday Church services. (Yep, between the kids and step kids I have a 19,18.17 and 16 yr old.)

I don't know when they stop being stupid. Maybe they don't. (Maybe we don't either.) I think we just slide our scale until our expectations meet their behavior in the middle somewhere.

Of course you know they think we're stupid too. And inflexible doesn't begin to define teenage behavior and thinking.

Pete, as you know, kids are joy, sorrow, aggravation and amusement all wrapped up in one. My 19 yr. old made me crazy, but now that she's in college we miss her every day. I dunno, I try to find the humor in whatever dopey thing they try, and pray they survive their teenage years in tact.

If life's a test, then I'm convinced kids are the toughest mid term exam you get.

Just keep questioning your kid's decisions if you think they are acting stupid. I didn't really see anything too crazy quoted in this discussion, and I'm a fairly cautious person about most things, but there is something to say for constantly being the voice of wisdom in your children's lives.

Your goal should be to hammer it into their head repeatedly so they think about your words before they do the next stupid thing. Doesn't mean it'll make em stop - but at least reconsider. Every young person knows that their parents are smarter, but they can't admit it because that means they'd have to do everything their parents say - and that is just not American. Anyway, eventually the angel beats the devil no matter how hard your kids try for the opposite.
