I had some damage on the lip of my wheel repaired by a wheel repair shop in Northern Virginia. They ended up stripping the OEM paint from the wheel and then repainting it. They never told me they were going to do this and repainted the entire wheel, only telling me this after they did it.

They just sent me photos and the color is completely wrong. They said it is not possible to perfectly match wheel paint because there are no paint codes for wheel paint.

I am livid and I refused to pickup the wheel.

    What are my options here?

My OEM Grigio Fero wheel is on the top, and repainted wheel is on the bottom, photo:

The one on top is dirty but definitely a shade lighter than the repaint. A good shop would clean the wheel and use a color matching system to get the right one. I guess they just eyeballed it?

This is what I tell all my friends that have a wife that is anal on paint colour. When she has finally decided what colour to paint a room and gives you the sample jar to match , buy your paint that matches it then ask the paint shop to fill another sample jar with the just made paint.

THROW AWAY THE SAMPLE JAR THE WIFE GAVE.

This way when she complains about the colour you can show her its the same.

My friend what you have is a thing called paint all or none. No one will ever match a factory job.

IMO just buy another rim , especially if you are anal like me :)

BTW why the hell are your rims so dirty ?

Also the reason why there is a shade difference is the shop probably only made a half litre if that. Ferrari would make 100's of litres. The bigger the volume the less the inaccuracies.

The difference in paint looks indiscernible, at least from your photo. To be fair, some shops do repaint the entire wheel. I would either have all of them repainted so it's a full match or purchase a new wheel. The likelihood of the shop agreeing to purchase a new wheel is pretty slim.

Or, get the other wheel on the same side painted to match. No one will be able to see both sides at once.

Someone will make this comment. I might as well say it: "The mismatch will devalue the car".

It can look the same. The shop should color match.

I have had wheels repaired many times on many different cars and on 3 Ferraris in the past.

A good painter will match it perfectly. They need the right eye and patience and some trial and error.

Once matched look at the wheel in and out doors to make sure at different angles.

I have the same color wheels and when I had mine straightened last they worked on a shop wheel until they had the color matched, only then did they strip and repair mine.

I’d take an original wheel to them and tell them to match it. It is definitely possible.

The repainted wheel at the 11 o'clock section looks pretty good.

May just be a poor photo, with mixed lighting sources.

Go see them all cleaned up.

I agree they definitely botched the paint match job. A bigger concern here is that you now have a painted wheel.

In my personal experience, a wheel that has been painted is highly vulnerable to paint chips from rocks or any other objects the wheel can come into contact with at high speeds. I’ve always gone the powder coat direction if I did anything to my wheels. You don’t want a painted wheel, especially on your Ferrari. You’ll understand exactly what I’m saying after a few thousand miles, if that. Another maintenance/upkeep job added.

Buy a new OEM wheel or better yet buy a new aftermarket set you like more. They’re out there.

all OEM factory Ferrari wheels are painted
powder coating has its issues, including smothering the finer details in the forging
all in all, better to stay OEM and paint. easier to color match, too.

wheels cannot be partially painted after a repair
the whole wheel must be painted
the issue here is not that they did not tell you that fact, but that they did not match the color

They need to do a spray out..not dipping a stir stick into paint and showing it. Paint can change based on primer, gun pressure, number of coats, etc. Matter of fact the paint isn't even mixed to a consistent color. If that is their methodology for matching paint, then don't expect this to match much better. Just my .02

    Ugh.

If this second attempt fails, then I’ll just pickup the wheel and have another shop paint all four wheels. Not sure what else to do at this point since the damage has been done.

Ok since no one said it
I think you can easily match the dirt on your original wheel after a good run - and no one will know the dirt was put on after a repair.
Solves two problems, now you match and you don't have to clean your wheels... its a dirty job that no one likes !!!
In the words of Magnus Walker - DIRT DONT SLOW YOU DOWN !!!

Joking - I have had single wheels repaired and painted / powder coated without any issues. You have good advice given here from members - best to move on to another shop or wheel purchase.

Here is the second attempt at the wheel shop. The wheel with the Ferrari center cap is the original OEM paint used to match and the wheel without a center cap was the repainted ones. Thoughts?

Question: are they painting the inside barrel too?

An earlier post mentioned that they stripped the old paint, but left the tires on?

I don't see how they can strip the old paint but leave the tires on.

I would take all 4 wheels to a paint shop, remove the tires, and paint.

    This is the way.

Man I feel your pain. I'm going through the same problem right now. Paint match is impossible because there is no paint code for the wheels which means I have to do at least 2 wheels to fix one, no one wants to powder coat them because they're forged, tried to have the wheel touched up by the best place in town but they lost their 'guy' and the new guy royally sucks - and even if I can get them fixed I have to deal with getting the tires back on without causing more damage.

Honestly it seems like buying a new wheel is the least amount of hassle if you want it done right.

I think you need a new shop… you don’t paint wheels with the tire on…

You strip them…repair them …X-ray them for the solid repair and then prep them and paint. All with the thee removed and in a paint booth !

Your problem here is the shop it seams.

Does not look like they know what they doing

There is a paint code for both Grigio Ferro and Grigio Ferro Metallic paint that Ferrari uses on the body.
Same paint they use for the wheels? I don't know.
There have been a few iterations of the paint over the years.
Even a factory new wheel might vary a bit from the other 3.
I ended up buying a new OEM factory Grgio Ferro set for $7,700 from Eurospares.
