    Hi guys,

Is it essential to remove the driver side wheel and wheel shield in order to replace gear box oil?

I have a storage lift and it “seems” like I can get to all bolts that are underneath the car while it’s in the air without additional removal of anything.

*** But, any info on the procedure I read, so far, included removal of wheel/shield. Perhaps I am missing something I don’t know about.

Trying to tackle this myself this year.

    Mine is a 76 308 (Steel).
    Thank you.

    Mike

I don’t recall removing the arch liner .Birdmans tutorial covers everything you need to know .
Gen tip with all cars is remove the filler plug ( top of drop down gears ) first before undoing the drain plug .

When adding oil wait until it spills out of the side ( at the stern of the g box ) level hole .Put that back in and add another cup full to sufficiently fill the drop down gear housing .

If you have to remove the wheel well , note the screw lengths and there places .Don’t re fit a longer screw in the Fwds vertical side .As there’s the heater hose running very close behind .
Once unscrewed it simply bends out of the way ,Easy to bend it back .Some first timers preventatively masking tape up the wheel arch paint lip sos to prevent scratching removing / inserting said liner .

Finally don’t over tighten the plugs and used fresh crush washers .

Thanks, I read Birdman’s tutorial and it was very informative. Perhaps removing the wheel well is only essential when using floor jacks?

I have an inspection pit in one garage . So like you can get under it and maintain its level .

I think you will find it difficult to remove the fill plug without removing the wheel well!

Removing the wheel well is a 5 min. job!

308 GT4 here so may not be 100% representative. Have changed the gearbox oil a couple of times and never removed the wheel or wheel well to do so.

For what it’s worth, I was able to do this job in my driveway without removing the wheel well.

For me it is easier to remove the fender liner to gain access to this fill plug on top of the transfer gear case when comes to filling it up and much easier thank filling from the bottom unless you have a lift.

Filling from that plug is my preference as well. A funnel with a long tube is a huge help.

I've personally done this procedure many times without removing the wheel, and it's worked out just fine. If you're sure you can reach all the necessary bolts underneath the car while it's in the air, you should be fine proceeding without removing the wheel/shield.
