Currently my original set of tires are showing signs of age, more in terms of cracked sidewalls than tread wear as there is only 7K miles on the odometer. I'm interested in knowing what the board would reccomend for replacements. I'm also interested in knowing if there is any reason to retain the original set.
    Any advice is welcome.
    Thanks

Recently replaced my old Goodyears for the reasons you mention.
    I went with 225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 Bridgestone S03's.
    Big improvement.

Shouldn't Ron clarify whether he has 16" or 390mm metric wheels?

Not positive but i believe all 88's had 16" wheels.
Choices are limited with TRX's, either you find them are buy new wheels!

Ron, www.tirerack.com has all kinds of great info for researching tires....I'd trust that more than us "hacks". Oh, and save those old tires...make great planters for the front yard! ;)

Depends what you want to use the car for.
Agree looking through tire rack tests are the way to go.

My experience on an 88 Mondial used for daily Grand Touring and longish trips:
    1. Even carved pine wood is better than the original Gatorbacks. Any newer/recent tech tire is an improvement.
    2. I had a very satisfying experience with Pirelli P6000 215/55F and 225/55 - much quieter, better ride, more responsive, easier to steer and extremely safe, predictable and controllable while tossing the rear of the car around with the throttle - never really knew what steering with the throttle meant before.
    Just my experience

    Hi,
Thanks for the advice thus far. I checked the sizes and they are: Front 205-55-VR16 and Rear 225-55-VR16. Original equipment are/ were GoodYear Eagles.
I drive the car in good weather only. I am less interested in the cost than I am in getting the most appropriate brand / model for the car.
    Please provide your thoughts.
    Thanks
    - Ron

I believe the OE tires are 205/55-16's up front and 225/50-16's in back. I went with the Bridgestone RE-730's and LOVE them. They are not the top of the Birdgestone line, but I didn't want to spend the $$$ for the S02's or S03's at the time. In hindsite, I would probably get the best tires since I'm only putting about 1200 miles/year on the car.

I have always been happy with Bridgestones - and hey, if they are good enough for Shumi and Rubens, they are good enough for me!
