Naturally I mean before computers. Such as, for instance, Larry Shinoda (Corvette designer) shows a huge stack he got out of GM. I heard in recent times his family put on an exhibit. If I were a '63 split iwndow fan, like to have an early rendering say from '61.An auction house in Italy is selling off the second part of Bertone Carroozzeria stuff in May but I just requested the prices for scale models and drawings sold for in their Nov. 18th 2018 sale. I imagine the prices are highest for

    original, signed
    second tier, original unsigned
third tier, high quality copy of original signed by the artist.

What about Detroit automakers-what is their policy, do they let designers take their old drawings home? What venue do designers who have a lot of their own work sell them at?

The only designer who I know personally that sells paintings of cars he designed is Camilo Pardo, designer for the '05-06 Ford GT but I'm pretty sure they are paintings done after the car was in production and outside of school so to speak. I think at the Fabulous Fords Forever show in Buena Park a year ago they were several hundred each for signed giclee prints on canvas but if I were owner of '05-06 I would've been a buyer

He designed the original Thunderbird and the Barracuda.
Sadly, at 91, he's taken a turn for the worst health wise so I can't verify the status of order fulfillment.
There were some originals for sale.

The official policy at GM and Ford was straightforward. Any and all design artwork the designer produced belonged to the company. In the early days, one would have to smuggle out design drawings. However that policy changed a bit later. Every 6 months or so there would be a ‘purge’ of the artwork files to make room for the latest stuff. They would throw everything away. I made it a point to ask whomever was my boss at the time if they would write me a pass to take my work home. They would generally accommodate me. As a result I was able to keep @ 400 - 500 original sketches. It was either that or the dumpster! I figured that all that work was part of history and I couldn’t bring myself to dispose of it. Fast forward to several years ago, and GM Historical asked retired designers to have the Design Center digitize original artwork. They photographed all my work and returned it to me. They did send out a note asking us not to sell any artwork we have, but to donate it to the GM Historical Museum. There is a lot of work that exists from the ‘60’s - ‘90’s. A search on EBay shows that you can purchase it if you are looking for it.

Today, things are a bit different. Because most everything is digital, if you try to keep your work somehow you will get fired. Immediately. And escorted out that same day. Zero tolerance. Big brother has access to your computer workspace.

The artwork that was done from the ‘30’s - 2000’s is a lost art and gone forever. Computers have replaced analog techniques. If you can find original artwork keep it. It’s a part of design history.
