Tonight's dinner is Burger King. Its right next door to the hotel and its raining. Tomorrow I might head to Vegas. I'll drive down.

    Bring your camera!

Getting on a cruise ship mañana. Last ditch effort to kick this cold. Think it's mostly done. Chicken soup, same recipe as before.

I don't plan on doing any fine dining in Vegas. Mostly hit the Buffets. I'm driving because I might head over to Phoenix or LA too. Hopefully by tomorrow's dinner I hit an Indian casino in Corning, California. Forget the name but have the exit memorized. The restaurant there makes the best prime rib I've ever eaten.

Even the blind squirrel finds a nut...Even a broken clock is right twice a day...and so on...

And the latest; even I can cook an above average meal :)

We are both in shock over how good this beef and asparagus were tonight.

Finally went to the butcher I mentioned a while back and picked up a 1.5lb dry aged porterhouse.

Followed the cast-iron-pan cooking instructions from the folks here for the beef and cooked the asparagus under a broiler with a marinade of fresh garlic-herb butter.

This was the steak we’ve been waiting for; juicy, literally melt-in-your-mouth tender, flavorful. Among the very best beef I’ve ever cooked. The asparagus was perhaps the best veggie I’ve ever done.

Drank an above average Chave Crozes Hermitage with it, amazing dinner. Happy tummy, happy girlfriend, happy chef :)

Vegas has a lot of great, cheap places to eat if you get off the Strip. Asian, Tex Mex, South American, Filipino, Hawaiian, etc. Yelp has never let us down. Safe travels...T

Looks great, but I’m not a fan of cooked carrots. Drive my wife crazy. Same with beets.

Thanks T...…… I'm going because its "cheap" this time of year. For some reason Christmas is not popular in Vegas. Gets expensive again for New Years.

Last night ended up at Panda Express.

Yeah, we were there 2, maybe 3 Xmas ago. It was quiet, relatively. As it got closer to NYE, much more crowded.

I would avoid the big fancy buffet at Caesars. Lines were crazy long and is not worth the $$$ IMO.

We tried the one at Paris once. Meh. The Asian place near the main entrance is better.

If you go to the buffet at Bally's, let us know how it is. We've heard good things about it, but never tried it...T

    There is a back story to tonight's dinner...I am on the mailing list for a little place in Barcelona that is on my personal top places list, called Cal Pep and they have been emailing me recipes for 15 years or more. I finally saw one that I had to try, a sea bass with artichokes and a creamy lemon sauce. So we bought the ingredients for that at the markets and fish monger (sub'ing local caught cod for Mediterranean sea bass). They also had some fantastic looking wild tiger prawns, so a two-course dinner was devised. Here's some in-process pics and the finished plates;

First Course: Grilled Tiger Prawns in lemon-herb-garlic butter

Second Course: Wild Cod with artichokes and creamy lemon sauce

I have to say, this was some of the best cooking I've done yet, which is to say I still made a few mistakes, but it came out pretty good (although the sauce was too lemony and the egg yolk in the sauce got a little too scrambled-eggy since I didn't wait long enough for the pan to cool before adding it - I knew better and still didn't wait long enough...damn. Still tasted fine.). These dishes paired well with a very good (and inexpensive) White Burgundy from Louis Latour. The quality and freshness off the tiger prawns and cod were outstanding. That fish monger is the real deal, very happy to have found it (and the butcher from yesterday).

    ^^ Looks great!

I hacked it off with a tiny knife and It was still good. That rib roast didn’t get to see any smoke too cold and rainy so just an oven roast.

Good to know about Caesars, I'll probably be staying there. They have a deal with Travel Lodge/Wyndham resorts and their rewards program. When I go to central Washington State, I stay at Travel Lodge. I'm their highest level of rewards membership. Net result I can get any Caesars property for $27 per night. I tip the check in person $20 and they always upgrade me.
I stopped in Reno for the night. Had In N Out burger for dinner while in California. My route took me off the I-5 before the Indian casino.

Made a giant batch of linguine primavera with chicken. (Ania is working 3 straight 15 hour days, so I wanted something I could put into Tupperware and she could take to work.)

I had to use a giant wok to make it and the bowl in this pic is the giant steel outermost bowl in those stacked bowl sets. I had a plate tonight, it was pretty good.
