i have been asked to provide my f40 for a promotional display.
they are paying for transport, insurance, security, and nobody drives it.
i can be there for unloading and reloading.

what do people charge for something like this? is it like movie charges? rental charges, less a discount for not driving it?

i put this question in the silver section but thought i better ask you guys who have this car since you might have been asked this already.

guyincognito suggested 1% of value/day. that seems a little excessive for a 10 day period. but what do you guys think or know?

Exotic car rental prices are between 1% to 2% per day. But as you said, the car is driven and obviously, it's a business so they are making money and have costs.

Charging 1% for an F40 per day would be 7k euros or 70k euros for the 10 days which would be excessive. I think if they agree to 5k euros, that would still be a pretty good payout. Make sure their insurance is up to date on F40's values.

I suppose you first need to decide why put your car on display? As a favor, for gearheads to appreciate, is it a major attraction or part of other attactions ... in other words, do you really want to do this? If you do, then whatever monies you want are not that important, if not, then it'll require a lot of cash to motive you. Nice that you've been asked and that you have a choice. Good luck.

i dont know what to think. i dont want any of the hassle or risks (its crossing all of europe to get to this destination), for nothing. i also dont want to be an ass about it. 70k euros is excessive, but are you saying 5k/day is more like it? coz 5k total is not going to get me to do this.

i dunno.

I was saying 5k total. But if you dont want the hassle or risks, just pass. If you are not motivated by the idea itself (who they are, what is it for, etc..) then it wont be worth it unless of course they are pretty well funded and can write you a 25k to 50k check for the 10 days to make the hassles worth it.

But i also dont know who they are.

Why would you even bother with this? If you can afford an F40 you probably don't need the money so why take the risk of damaging your precious car by lending it out to someone?

Beyond the obvious forms of damage, there are other hidden risks:
For example:
-Someone not familiar with an F40 is more likely to miss a shift. That may not result in immediate damage, but a blown engine down the road. Even if it immediately blows the engine, how would you prove it is the renters fault? Maybe the engine was just "going to go" anyway.
-if an incident does happen, pictures may be posted all over the web and that F40 could forever be stained as a "rental car" that was trashed. Not good for resale value to say the least.

Perhaps there is something that can be written in to the contract to protect from those?

Ross its not about renting it, its the insurance you need to be more concerned about and how who is responsible if something gets broken.

wasn't there a case with a reporter from UK who damaged a 917 Le-Mans car and was sued ?

This makes it sound like a scam - it would be surprising if there are no F40s closer

Make sure it's covered and then balance their needs and yours. 70k is too much. 5k too little. How about 40k? 50?

What about clauses to make sure you get it delivered back on certain date...or stiff penalty. With money in escrow so you don't have to chase after it if they don't perform.

It needs to go quite far which would be a worry for me. It's happened on several occasions for EVO Magazine alone that the delivery truck has crashed (and that was just in the UK!); that would be my biggest worry. It would really suck if the same happened to yours and your car is out of commission for a seriously long time (look at Travellers rebuilt, almost 2 years in the making!). A simple part can take a very long time to either order or be custom made if the part isn't available anymore. Even if it's a quick rebuilt you'd still look at 6-9 months easy, to me that would not be worth it.

If it was relatively close to you so that you could drive there yourself it's a different matter and can't see why not. Call it what ever you want, but if you crash the car on your own accord it's surely easier to live with than if a transpo truck crashes it completely out of your hands...

This.

A short trip within say 5 hours, I understand. Transporting the car anymore than that, and pulses start to rise.

Even if there's a clause where the car is to be driven by you, and you only. I'd still be worried.

Like it's been said, transporters have wrecked here in the US, and cars lost. I'd only do it for a hefty sum, plus the person looking to show off the car must cover the car+x amount.

Across Europe? Which direction because if it was towards the east I would not necessarily expect its return.

Promotional display doesn't exactly translate to movie money in my mind. I think before you think money you should have a very clear picture of the transport process. They're not making anymore f40s and that would be my biggest turn off. It's cool that you're considering it in the first place. Not everyone has had the opportunity to see one in the raw.

Why bother? Even for promotional display I'd say there's a high risk you'll get an exterior damage of some sort. Unless the car is guarded people will go over and under barriers to do such things as sit on the car etc.

And talking the car across Europe? There are plenty of F40's around, why do they want yours?

If you want to display your car, bring it to local car meets. Pop by for a couple of minutes (or hours), let some genuine enthusiasts enjoy seeing the car, then take it home again.

This one popped up when I googled "F40 rental".

Image Unavailable, Please Login

At GBP 4k per day, that would indeed come up to EUR 50k over 10 days. However…

Aside from the other caveats mentioned, I would worry about issues that I don't notice immediately when the car is returned. It may look OK and it may run OK but it's been rented to strangers. Have you ever lent your prized tools to your neighbours or friends, let alone strangers? Bad idea. I was cursing myself just yesterday for lending my loppers to a neighbour… he nicked the damn blade.

Folks who rent out exotic cars for a living have systems in place to manage known risks, they set aside time to manage such risks and the vehicles are business assets with calculated lifespans and not personal property. So when one of us tries to do this out of the blue, even for a friend, we are inviting trouble.

Anyway, these people must have googled "F40 rental" as well so you have to wonder why they are asking for your car.

I agree with the others. Its probably best to not let the car out of your sight. If it were still in production, they could always get you a new one. This is different. And I will take a guess here to say I bet yours is in pretty good condition. I think you have to consider how much trouble it would be to get another one in the same or similar condition.

If this is a cause you believe in and want to help out, maybe it would be easier to send them some money as a contribution. You'll be helping out but also keeping peace of mind.
