There is an air museum down here that is basically going out of business and they must have sold their F-4. It was in rough shape, but was complete for a static display. What do those things sell for and how available are they? I would love to have one just to stick in a barn somewhere. I searched on the internet for awhile and didn't find anything.

Their value is that of the metal involved. You can buy used, flyable F-4s, but you can't fly them in the USA, because that would be against the law here. If you want a war bird, used Mi15, 17 & 19s are all under 100k. And they fly (at least for a while).

That reminds me of this F-4 sitting at Stinson field which is a few miles south of downtown San Antonio. Dunno how long it's been there but it looks like a while. I bet if you, Ron, Greg, a flatbed truck and a keg got together around 8pm on Saturday you could have it on your way back to Dallas by 4am on Sunday :D

There is what looks like a pretty complete F-111 sitting at an Army surplus store out on interstate 30 maybe halfway between Dallas and Texarkana.

    Out of my mind
Rob, I could be wrong, but I heard that even to buy a "scrap" warbird second-hand, requires clearence by the DOD.

There is an outfit at Mojive airport that converts them to drones. They used up all the f-86's a few years back and are now whittling down the F-4 stock from Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona. Think its Flight Systems or something like that. I'l sniff around....maybe see what can be done. There was one on display at the Air Races that is a civilian owned machine and flies on a regular basis. Also an F-100 that lives at Mather AFB, now civilian, in Sacramento that is also active.

It is Flight Systems somethingoranother who bring them back to flying condition and then BAE outfits them to be drones. I have talked with a few of the F-4 pilots about six months ago and they said there were 73 that are in flying condition but they will eventually all be shot down. There are several hundred in storage at Davis Monthan......

I have been looking more at the boneyard at Davis Monthan using Google Earth.... It's incredible seeing all those planes, I just found a few hundred more F-4's than the ones in the above pic. I really recomend checking it out, it's just a few miles southeast of Tucson, AZ.

I just saw a show about that place the other day and it showed how the whole process works. I think the show was about recycling. I'm not sure what channel it was on, but it was very interesting.

Asking around about this Flight Systems BAE, it seems is owned by a British outfit. MarkPDX----great shots of DM. I was there in March 62 loading C-124 Globemasters with communications equipment headed for Siagon and got a tour of the facility. Holy Sh*t....talk aabout a bunch of old airplanes.

I see L-39's and an occasional A-4 flying around Arlington on check rides and shakedowns. There is an outfit there that rebuilds imported jets and another that does old Yaks.
They sound great when they go over head. I can hear them coming from a long ways away.
Can't get close to the jets, parked by Paul Allen's Museum/hanger. The Yaks are all wingless on the other side of the airport, fresh out of shipping containers.

I'll see about getting some pictures
