Is it hard to sail a basic boat? Does it relate to sailing a regular sailboat in any way?

    Yes. Somewhat.

You generally run with the boat on a broad reach (perpendicular to the wind direction) in order to get the boat started. You pretty much alway sail the boat closed hauled (i.e. with the sail pulled all the way in....it's a rotating mast, like a windsurfer). If you sail directly down with the wind, the boat dies (this is different than softwater sailing). It's all related to the fact that iceboats are propelled at very fast speeds because of the apparent wind. My E Skeeter will go 50 mph on a broad reach in 5 mph wind.

If you are sitting at a red light in your F50 with the driver's window open with the wind blowing perpendicular to the car at 5 mph...you feel 5 mph of wind on your left cheek.
The light turns green...and now you are traveling in your F50 at 45mph (?1st gear) with your head out the driver's window. You will feel the apparent wind on the left side of your nose at about 50mph (its the vector formed by 5mph & 45 mph). Iceboats go faster than the speed of the wind.

As the iceboat goes faster it "sees" even more apparent wind, and the boat goes even faster & faster...until drag takes over.

If you compare the pics of the DN, Renegade & E Skeeter, you can see that we eliminate drag in the E Skeeter by having longer masts & shorter booms (like an airplane wing).

Looking foward to the pics. I'm into Citroens. If you'll excuse my bias, my Maserati Khamsin is the best Citroen ever made. Citroen owned Maserati at one point. The Citroen hydraulics control the steering (2 turns lock to lock), brakes, clutch, lights & seat.

No Porsche...mainly British, cast iron, slush and resin cars.

The 928 is the sail number on my E Skeeter.

Thanks for the link looks like I might be getting a used boat. What do I look for on the boat are there any common problems? Whats the speed on a smaller boat? Im assuming I can sail it on a small 1.5 mile lake?

I gather that you are interested in a DN. A DN will go 60mph. Makes sure all the hardware is up to date and that the sail, hull, plank and runners are in good shape. Try to get one with a carbon fiber mast. You also need a helmet, bear claws and creepers.

Im looking to spend the least amount of money as I possibly can perhaps 1500 or less. As I said I would only sail one on a lake and maybe too get the hang of it on a 3 acre pond. Do you have more pictures of your E Skeeter that thing looks pretty darn cool.

sailing on ice or in the cold is not for me...I like Caribbean sailing where I can find a nice cove and take the dingy in to a small island bar and sip a libation or two..maybe rent a jeep or bike to explre the island...enjoy a nice dinner and then move on to another venue for a new day...Foxy's and Ivan's come to mine...all in 85 degree weather...

When I go to warm places in the winter with the wife & kids, we always look to rent a Hobie to enjoy the warm waters of Mexico or the Caribbean.... however once bitten (hopefully not frostbitten) by the enticing frigid winter winds, it is hard to leave during iceboating season....

I see that you're from Ohio. There is an ice yacht club in Toledo.

Another type of iceboat that you might consider is the Arrow. It seats two persons, is more comfortable than a DN and also goes about 60mph.

Very cool thread! I don't sail too much, a bit scared quite frankly.

But my brothers an avid sailor. He just got back from a SALTS trip for three months in the south pacific on a 120 foot (just guessing here, but they're BIG) two masted schooner. And my good friend owns a half share in a boat that I sometimes go on.
