Just a honest question. It seems that this car is considered one of the icons of the 911 range.

It's status is way up there. Last of the air cooled, very limited numbers (182, I think).

Financially speaking........it is an overpriced joke. As all top of the line special edition turbo's are.........

It's a nice car, as all 993's are, and is the top of the 993 model range........but it is absolutely positively no where near worth twice to three times the price of an equivalent clean 993TT.......if you use current USD asking prices as an example. You can very tastefully accomplish "way more than Porsche did" on the Turbo S in terms of both performance and appearance, for an expenditure of about $30K of aftermarket accessories on a regular 993TT.

What is the price range for an average 993 Turbo vs. a 993 Turbo S? Anyone know the total 993 Turbo S production numbers other than the quantity sold in US?

Regular 993 turbos run anywhere between $50k to $70k depending on the mileage.
993 turbo S were all way over $120k (the ones that infrequently show up on the market).

    The Wiki response:

"During the second to the last year of production of the 993 (1997), Porsche offered the 993 Turbo S. Ultimately 183 cars were sold. The Turbo S is a high-spec Turbo including a power upgrade to 424 hp (SAE) for the American market and to 450 hp (DIN) in other markets. The inclusion of extras including carbonfibre decoration in the interior makes it different from the earlier lightweight, spartan 964 Turbo S. The 993 Turbo S is recognized by yellow brake calipers, a slightly larger rear wing, a 4-pipe exhaust and air scoops behind the doors. This was the last of the air-cooled Turbos. 12 Turbo S cars were delivered to Australia.

The information pertaining to production numbers of the 993 Turbo S - only relate to the US/NA market. If you include the ROW (rest of the world) market, then the number of 993 Turbo S produced is greater than the 183 units listed here. It is also worth noting that the 993 Turbo and 993 Turbo S were still produced for ROW market - from 08/97 to around 04/98 - being a 1998 Model Year vehicle."

Found this on Howstuffworks of all places. No production #s from many sources.

"Despite a few scary close encounters with hedgerows in rainy weather, the magazine pronounced the Turbo S "the ultimate 911." There was special praise for the powerful brakes -- "There are less effective brick walls" -- and, of course, the always prodigious grip. But the foul weather precluded track tests, so Autocar could only parrot Porsche's own performance figures. And those numbers suggest the S was little, if any faster than the 400-horsepower Turbo.

As for production, we don't have an official figure, but we do know the U.K. was allotted just 33 cars, the U.S. only 168, so the likely total was no more than 500. Comedian and Porschephile Jerry Seinfeld managed to get one, but many other wealthy swells must have been disappointed."
