You do mean dress shirt right? My most expensive tee, probably one of the one-off fraternity shirts for X party/event at $25.
I knew a guy in the cotton goods biz, worked for one of the big importers that sold to Hanes, Tommy H, etc. He said their wholesale on a $50 polo shirt might be ~$6-8, and then a higher quality one that sold for $100 might be $10-15 wholesale. Same for shirts - cheap might be .10-1.00, 'luxury' might run $4-8. I saw an article the other day which broke down the price of a Lagerfeld dress which sold for $2,300, IIRC it had ~$300 in materials and $200 in labor. The wholesaler doubles the price to the retailer, who doubles the price again. It implied in fashion clothing 100% markup was the magic number. As for me, 30 euros at the store next to the Ferrari museum.
Antony, Keep something in mind........... A watch is a less depreciating asset. Not many people want to buy your smelly shirt after you have worn it a few years. In fact, I don't think Goodwill will even pick it up anymore. You have to bring it to them if you want to donate it. Now, take the watch in your example. Nicely maintained watches will hold their value as inflation raises the price of new ones. Further, if your in a pinch and want to sell off assets, I'd bet you would fair better with a watch. Not that I'm saying blowing a lot on a watch is a great idea. I just think blowing $300-$400 for a T-Shirt is not prudent. (Unless you're the designer)
That was not his point at all.....I once knew a guy who wouldn't have bought a 430 for 100K below window (hypothetical) but he paid $200 for a baseball bat! If someone likes to express himself through style then who is anyone to say he shouldn't. Since when does depreciation factor into clothing purchases? By your logic no one would ever eat in a fine restaurant again either!
$22 for some (labeless) armanis. They're actually really comfortable. I wear 'em with pants from wal-mart _
Everyone has different priorities in life. Some people love fashion and don't mind spending a pretty penny on clothing and driving a civic while others are perfectly content shopping at Wal-Mart yet drive a Ferrari.. haha.. It's all about what's important to YOU. My mother doesn't understand how/why I spend so much on my car, "why get a GT when a v6 is so much cheaper? it's the same car" yeah, ok.. same with my clothing/jewelry/nails but she has a few hundred clocks.. I try to explain to her but she doesn't get it. lol
Hey Anthony Where did you get your Dsquared2 shirt? I have a few items I had friends buy me in Europe. I know Fred Segal sells their shoes.
Not me............... He, you, anyone can do what they want, I don't care. I just said IMO it wasn't prudent. BTW- Value & depreciation factor into all my purchases. If you want to do both, just buy right. I've purchased $300 shirts for $75. You just have to find the right deal.
I never catch sales.. I have to have everything the minute I see it which is usually the day it comes out. I'm a shopaholic.
Steph, I'd work on that if I was you............ If you get out of the cycle, I think you'll see that it's no big deal.
I LOVEEEEEE Sales I have no problem going to them. BUT some high end designers like Gucci, Dsquared, Armani (Black Label) only carry a certain about of each design. For example the newest season of Black Label Armani had a pair of dress slacks that were in their ads they only made 23 of them for the entire U.S. just my luck....i went lask week and SOLD OUT! everywhere....
I have a closet full of black v-neck t-shirts from Old Navy - two for $10... My closet also has a bunch of FerrariChat, Ricambi America and Rampage t- and sport shirts... I can't remember if there ever was a time where I paid over $20 for a t-shirt... In fact, I can't remember paying $15 or even $12 for a t-shirt...
You're all Crazy!!!!! Everyone knows that gold pooper scoopers are where it's at! Image Unavailable, Please Login
At a vintage race auction I think I paid $30. BTW, Haywood was racing a Can Am or P car that weekend. I have a great photo of all the cars coming up to green. Image Unavailable, Please Login
