Hi Guys I am recent Ferrari Owner but a long time fan. The fact that I now own one makes reading up on them all the more interesting. So far I've purchased Forza several times and I've heard of one called "Prancing Horse". What publications do you Ferrarista's suggest.
FORZA! I have never even seen an issue of Forza, but by the way the people here at FerrariChat describe it, it sounds like it's awesome.
It depends on what you like to read about in a mag. I prefer Cavallino. Very good researched articles by known Ferrari experts. However they are mainly focussed on the older cars. Forza has a good selection on both older and newer models, but IMO Forza often contains errors and I don't like the idea that about 50% of every issue are ads. I have never seen Prancing Horse myself. All I know is that it is the magazine of the American Ferrari Owners Club, and has been around for quite a number of years.
Considering I own an older car 84 Mondial, that would be an interesting read. Do they have a web site and what is it?
I have a sub to Forza, it's a good balanced mag with plenty for the vintage enthusiast. I had a sub to Cavallino and plan to renew it -- I've been missing some good stuff there. I've never seen Prancing Horse.
When he says "older" he means mostly 50,60's cars...maybe occaisionally 70's. Use "google" search engine....http://www.cavallino.com/ Forza is probably a better "mix" of articles, on both old and new cars. "prancing horse" is the quarterly magazine of the Ferrari Club of America....you really should join, there is a pretty active chapter in your province. Dave
Forza is good. It seems like by the time it hits the shelves it's old news. I thought it a little amusing how they did a blurb on the F430 in this months issue and used all the stock photos and at the time of the article hadn't even driven the thing. Old snews IMO. Go to Barnes and Noble and browse them for one you really want
Cavallino magazine tends to cover vintage models and history and Forza is the best for current models. If I had to choose just one, Forza! gary
I do prefur Cavallino, but thats just me. I like vintage ferraris and can learn about new cars from here. If you want to have a bit of both, with more focus on newer cars, Forza is the way to go. I regard Forza as a "rookie tifosi" mag. My .02
Forza is more modern content and nice glossy pictures. Prancing Horse is the quarterly Ferrari Club of America publication (not the Ferrari Owners Club). Cavallino is mainly the older cars (pre 308's) and for people that are interested in the histories of the cars. They are going to be publishing two newsletters, one for the V8 cars, one for the flat 12's soon. Both are way over priced, but slap a prancing horse on it and the lemmings will buy. Rossa is probably the hardest to get as distribution is limited to owners that got their cars through a FNA dealer, but I see it on the stand every now and then. I have all of the Forzas and Cavallino back to issue 16 (they start approaching $100 each for the ones I don't have). Different target audiences so not much overlap.
I am actually trying to get my hands on a past copy of Forza "Issue 19 October 1999" the article I am interested in is "Buyer's Guide: Mondial Cab". If you have it,let me know if it's a worthwhile read, and if I should invest into buying it. If not is there anyway someone on this thread can scan the article and email it to me. It would be greatly appreciated.
If you have not yet seen it, don't try it...it's worthless. But you better jump on the first Cavallino mag you come across !
Cavallino is mainly focussing on the older cars of the '50s en '60s. But recently they announced two new magazines, Flat-12 and Otto. The later one will focus on the 8-cylinder cars. Haven't seen a copy yet, but this might be interesting if you have a Mondial.
I think I must get them all or something..... I get: FORZA CAVALLINO PILOTA (Ferrari Owner's Club) HORSE TALES (Ferrari Club of America - NE region) PRANCING HORSE (Ferrari Club of America) THE NEWS BULLETIN (Ferrari Club of America) My two favourites are Forza and Cavallino - Forza does have a lot of ads but being a new Ferrari owner, I like to learn about the different resources - so the ads are not a bad thing. Cavallino is more refined and elegant and carries articles about cars of yesteryear. Either of them have great information in my eyes, so I like them both. The remaining subs. are those that come with membership to the various clubs. If you are wanting a recommendation on what to subscribe to, I say do it all.... they ALL have something very special to offer and if you are into Ferrari's the way most of us are, you will savour every word and photograph... The subs. are not very expensive overall and worth the price.
As stated above, Cavallino added a seperate mag for 8's and 12's. I just got the first one yeterday and I give it a 10. The mag for the 8's is called OTTO, which is eight in Italian. Covered the entire history of the 8's by model with photos...year proudced, number of units produced, HP, difference in versions, etc etc. I could not put it down .. most excellent. Future issues will cover concours tips, how to resource parts, do it yourself info, etc. Otto fills in the gap between other magazines and gives practical information an owner should have. I give it a 10.
Altough all great magazines with lots of nice curves and body lines, I never really saw many Ferraris in them. Then again, maybe there were, but I never noticed. At least we know where my priorities are.
I get both Forza and Cavallino. Both are VERY different, like most have said, Forza is like Road and Track, but all ferrari related, a ton of ads though, I read all the major articles once, then it goes on the self, Even though Cavallino is pricey, and only comes 6 times a year, I savor ever issue, and read it over and over, cover to cover, Basically it's like this, Forza = a good import beer, Cavallino = a great vintage wine
And for the hardcore Vintage enthusiast, Italian Cars Sport and Classic, and Ferrari World. Both out of production but all issues still available.
I'm surprised no one mentioned ROSSO which is sent to all owners by FNA. It's large format, glossy and contains lots of interesting stuff, especially whenever there is a new model launch.
