I think of the AK47 as ubiquitous, reliable, effective at what it does and inexpensive, but not totally refined or elegant.

The AK47 of the sports car world is the Corvette.

Does everything you ask it to, is brutally fast and effective, but perhaps not as refined or elegant as exotics... It just gets the job done every day...

Any Toyota Land Cruiser with a 2F motor (much like the previously mentioned toyota sr5 pick up). The most reliable vehicles in history and it's pretty well documented. 80's series trucks are great but most have an automatic transmission and a lot more electronics... time catches up and that means more maintenance. My 60 series is no doubt the most bulletproof, reliable, indestructible truck I've ever owned. In 7 years, not one single issue and it's a 1986. 171,000 miles and it's barely broken in. I've driven it in 110 degree temps long distance on highways and below freezing, deep snow through rough terrain. Land Cruisers are the most traveled vehicle ever made. My 40 series could be taken completely apart with a set of wrenches and 2 screw drivers. As basic as it gets.

As for the previous person who mentioned a Series 3 Land Rover. I had a 109" Series 3 for 3 years. Broke down on me monthly. It was my 3rd Rover. Land Cruisers were made to help guys in Land Rovers ;) I learned the hard way.

Fun thread. I hoped there would be lots of interpretations to the question. :)

911 is the AK-47 of cars

    - Looked the same since just after WW II
    - Instantly identifiable even if covered in dirt and mud
    - Simple, sturdy, basic design
    - People use them in the snow and rain, a sports car that's not afraid of the elements
    - Performance without concern for glitz and glam
    - Driven in more countries then most American's could ever name ;)
    - DNA from family tree includes both a Schwimmwagen (with machine gun mount) and Porsche designed Tiger tanks
    - Roads? "We don't need no stinking roads" (Blazing Saddles)

What if the army needed a supercar?

    I'd say 4wd like a Lambo or a gt-r

    Or the diesel R8

Or something with turbines to let it burn anything, like jaguar's concept ...

    Or the 918
